Finder or Explorer transfer: media offline or actually deleted?
Why does Finder or Explorer transfer report media offline?
Short answer
Usually the link, not the file, is broken: a Finder alias or Explorer shortcut reports a missing original when the target drive is disconnected, renamed or has a new drive letter. Reconnect the drive and search by exact filename. Thumbnails can outlive deleted files, so scan read-only only when that search finds nothing.
The situation
Finder or Explorer transfer shows a preview or edit decision but cannot open the original media.
A Finder alias and an Explorer shortcut are small pointer files, a few kilobytes each, that name a target elsewhere. When the message says the original cannot be found, the pointer is intact and the target is unreachable, which is a different situation from a file that has been erased.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
macOS resolves an alias by both path and file identifier, so it often survives a rename but not a drive that never mounted. Windows shortcuts store an absolute path with a drive letter, which a card reader can receive differently on each connection. Meanwhile Finder and Explorer keep thumbnail caches that show images long after the file itself was deleted.
A changed volume name, missing drive, moved folder and deleted file can trigger similar messages. For Finder or Explorer transfer, this matters because Finder or Explorer transfer can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Reconnect the drive or card reader that held the media and wait until it mounts on its own; do not copy anything onto it.
- 2
Open the alias or shortcut properties and read the recorded target path, filename and size, then write them down before trying anything else.
- 3
Search every mounted volume for that filename, including hidden and system-level folders, using Spotlight on macOS or an indexed search in Explorer.
- 4
If the search stays empty, scan the source card read-only and export any match to a second drive, then compare it with the recorded size.
Do not delete the alias or shortcut because it looks broken, and do not clear the thumbnail cache to force a refresh. Both hold the last evidence of the filename, size and location, and neither is the file itself, so removing them costs information and recovers nothing.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Broken pointers on a system disk are outside the reach of a media scan: File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 volumes and uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW or BIN images, so an APFS or HFS+ startup disk cannot be searched with it.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
You have the original again when the file size matches the number stored in the shortcut or alias, the file opens fully in its normal application rather than as a preview, and its creation date matches the shoot. A clip must play to its final second.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can Finder or Explorer transfer workflow be recovered in this situation?+
A Finder alias and an Explorer shortcut are small pointer files, a few kilobytes each, that name a target elsewhere. When the message says the original cannot be found, the pointer is intact and the target is unreachable, which is a different situation from a file that has been erased. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not delete the alias or shortcut because it looks broken, and do not clear the thumbnail cache to force a refresh.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
You have the original again when the file size matches the number stored in the shortcut or alias, the file opens fully in its normal application rather than as a preview, and its creation date matches the shoot.
