Releases, checksums and signing status

What is currently shipped, how large it is and how you can tell you have the right file.

The short answer

Every figure here can be recalculated from the file you downloaded.

The table below is generated directly from the published download manifests. Version, file size, architecture, signing status and SHA-256 checksum therefore come from the same source as the download itself and cannot differ from it.

01 / Current

Current state of the downloads

Both archives ship as ZIP files. Each checksum refers to the unmodified archive exactly as it is offered for download.

The archive contains the application together with its bundled open-source verification tools and their licence notices. There is no installer that brings further programs along, no advertising or offer steps, and no service that quietly installs itself in the background.

02 / Verify

How to verify your download

A checksum answers one question: is the file on your machine bit-for-bit identical to the published one? It protects against incomplete downloads and against tampered copies from third-party sources.

  1. 1

Download the archive only from file-recovery-hero.com.

  2. 2

Calculate the checksum: on macOS with shasum -a 256 <file>, on Windows with certutil -hashfile <file> SHA256.

  3. 3

Compare the result character by character with the value in the table above.

  4. 4

If they differ, download again and do not use the file until the values match.

03 / Signing

What signing and notarization mean

The macOS version is signed with a Developer ID and notarized by Apple. macOS can therefore confirm that the app comes from the stated developer and has not been altered since signing. It launches without extra approval steps.

The Windows version is currently unsigned. Windows may therefore show a SmartScreen notice on first launch. That is not a finding about the file itself but the consequence of a missing code signature. In that case, verify the SHA-256 sum before you run the application.

Open verification limit

A functional test of the Windows version on a real Windows device by us is still outstanding. The Windows logic is tested automatically, but an automated logic test does not replace a run on an actual Windows 10 or Windows 11 system.

04 / Licence

What a new version means for your licence

The licence covers the purchased major version for ten calendar years from confirmed payment, on two of your own devices. Updates within that major version are included. There is no subscription and no automatic renewal.

Existing activations survive an update. Stored language settings and keychain entries also stay compatible.

Common questions

Why is the Windows file larger than the macOS one?

The Windows version ships as a self-contained application and brings its own runtime. The macOS version is a universal app for Apple Silicon and Intel.

What do I do if Windows shows a warning?

That is caused by the missing code signature. First check the SHA-256 checksum against the value on this page. If it matches, the file is bit-for-bit the published one.

Do I get updates free of charge?

Updates within the purchased major version are included, for ten calendar years from confirmed payment. A future new major version is not automatically covered.

Where are the licence notices for the open-source tools you use?

The notices for the bundled media tools ship with the application and are included in the archives.

Verify first, then launch.

Compare your download's checksum with the table above.
