Emergency · camera card and ingest folder
A camera filename sequence has a gap
Does a gap in camera file numbers mean files were deleted?
Short answer
Not necessarily: card swaps, folder rollover, numbering resets and deliberate in-camera deletions also create gaps. Search every card, backup and ingest folder for the exact missing names first. Only if a file is confirmed absent everywhere is the gap a recovery target; then scan the card it was recorded on read-only.
The situation
Sequential names skip one or more numbers between otherwise intact assets.
A gap in the numbering is a bookkeeping observation, not proof of loss. Camera numbering runs across cards and folders, and it is reset, continued or rolled over depending on menu settings, so several harmless events produce exactly the same picture.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Most cameras count files continuously across cards, so numbers used on a second card leave a hole on the first. A new DCIM subfolder starts at the next number after a folder limit, single images deleted in playback leave their numbers empty, and a numbering reset restarts the count. Only a name that exists nowhere is really missing.
Deleted files, card changes, folder rollover, or camera numbering settings can all create gaps.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Write down the exact missing filenames, including the folder prefix, instead of working from the impression that something is gone.
- 2
Search every card, every DCIM subfolder and every ingest and backup folder for those names before touching any card.
- 3
Check the file numbering setting in the camera menu, because a reset or a folder rollover explains the gap without any data loss.
- 4
Only if a name is absent everywhere, scan the card it was recorded on read-only and export the hits to another drive.
Do not start a recovery scan or reformat cards because of a gap alone, and do not reset the numbering while looking for the files. A reset makes the camera reuse numbers that already exist elsewhere, and then two different pictures carry the same name during ingest.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
A recovered file usually loses its original name, so the gap in the numbering cannot be closed by name alone; capture time and picture content identify it instead. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT cards read-only and does not read camera numbering settings.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
The question is settled when every missing number has an explanation: found in another folder or backup, covered by a rollover or reset, deleted on purpose, or recovered and opened at full size. A gap that is understood needs no scan at all.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can camera card and ingest folder be recovered in this situation?+
A gap in the numbering is a bookkeeping observation, not proof of loss. Camera numbering runs across cards and folders, and it is reset, continued or rolled over depending on menu settings, so several harmless events produce exactly the same picture. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not start a recovery scan or reformat cards because of a gap alone, and do not reset the numbering while looking for the files.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
The question is settled when every missing number has an explanation: found in another folder or backup, covered by a rollover or reset, deleted on purpose, or recovered and opened at full size.
