Final Cut Pro: media offline or actually deleted?

Why does Final Cut Pro report media offline?

Short answer

Often not: Final Cut Pro shows a Missing File warning when an externally stored original has moved or its drive is disconnected, while media copied into the library stays available. Reconnect the drive, then choose File, Relink Files to point to the original. Scan read-only only if the file is missing from every drive and the library.

The situation

Final Cut Pro shows a preview or edit decision but cannot open the original media.

Final Cut Pro libraries can hold media inside the library bundle or merely link to it, and only the linked case can go missing. So the first fact to establish is which storage setting this event used, not whether the footage is lost.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Libraries are usually a mixture: early events were imported with copying, later ones left in place on an external drive to save space. A disconnected drive, a volume renamed in the Finder, or a folder moved outside Final Cut Pro breaks exactly the linked part. Deleting generated render files is harmless, deleting the external original is not, and both look similar in the browser.

A changed volume name, missing drive, moved folder and deleted file can trigger similar messages. For Final Cut Pro, this matters because Final Cut Pro can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Reconnect every drive that ever held media for this library and leave the library closed until they are all mounted again.

  2. 2

Open the library bundle through Show Package Contents and check whether the clip sits in Original Media, which settles the copied or linked question.

  3. 3

For linked clips, note the filename from the inspector and search the external drives and the camera card, then relink instead of recovering.

  4. 4

Scan the last known source read-only only when the file is on no drive and not in the bundle, and export to a different disk.

Avoid this now

Do not consolidate or move media while clips are still missing, and do not delete the library to rebuild it from scratch. Consolidation can write over a half-linked state, and the library holds the keywords, ratings and edits that no recovery scan returns.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Final Cut Pro libraries usually live on APFS system or media drives, which File Recovery Hero cannot read; it handles exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 sources such as camera cards and external media formatted for exchange between macOS and Windows.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The clip is properly reconnected when the browser shows no missing-file icon after relaunching Final Cut Pro, the inspector names a mounted volume, and playback at full quality runs to the end of the clip rather than a few seconds of preview.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Final Cut Pro workflow be recovered in this situation?+

Final Cut Pro libraries can hold media inside the library bundle or merely link to it, and only the linked case can go missing. So the first fact to establish is which storage setting this event used, not whether the footage is lost. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not consolidate or move media while clips are still missing, and do not delete the library to rebuild it from scratch.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
