Premiere shows Media Offline after copying files

Why did Premiere media go offline after I copied it?

Short answer

Usually because the paths changed, not the clips: Premiere stores file paths, and a new drive name or folder layout breaks them even though the copied bytes are intact. Select the offline clips, choose Link Media and point to the copied folder. Treat it as deleted-file recovery only if the copies are genuinely missing.

The situation

A project opened with red offline clips after media was copied or moved.

Copying media does not change a single byte inside the clips, but it does change where they live. Premiere stores the old location in the project, so red offline clips after a copy usually describe a path that no longer exists rather than footage that has gone.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The project file records a full path for every clip, including the drive name and every folder above it. Copying to a new disk changes the volume name, renaming folders during the copy changes the rest, and a copy that stopped early leaves some clips present and others not. Premiere marks all of these the same way.

Premiere references file paths; a new drive name or folder layout can break those references even when the clip bytes are intact.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the original card or source drive untouched until the project plays again, and do not reformat anything that was copied from.

  2. 2

Select an offline clip, open Link Media and read the path and file name Premiere last saw, then note the new folder.

  3. 3

Point Link Media at the copied folder with file name matching enabled, so the whole batch of clips relinks in one pass.

  4. 4

For clips that stay offline, check the source card for the original and, if it was deleted there, scan it read-only.

Avoid this now

Do not delete the offline clips from the project to clean up the timeline, and do not reformat the source card because the copy looked finished. The offline entries carry the last known file names and paths, and the card may still be the only complete copy.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Relinking is done in Premiere and needs no recovery software at all. If originals were deleted from the recording card, File Recovery Hero can scan that exFAT or FAT32 card, but it does not repair a clip that arrived incomplete on the edit drive.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

After relinking, play the whole sequence once and watch for clips that load but stop partway, because a truncated copy relinks just as happily as a complete one. Compare the byte size of each copied file with the original on the card before that card is cleared.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Premiere project and copied media be recovered in this situation?+

Copying media does not change a single byte inside the clips, but it does change where they live. Premiere stores the old location in the project, so red offline clips after a copy usually describe a path that no longer exists rather than footage that has gone. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not delete the offline clips from the project to clean up the timeline, and do not reformat the source card because the copy looked finished.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

After relinking, play the whole sequence once and watch for clips that load but stop partway, because a truncated copy relinks just as happily as a complete one.
