Final Cut Pro: only a proxy or preview remains
What can I do when only proxy media remains in Final Cut Pro?
Short answer
Only for editing, not for delivery: Final Cut Pro proxies are ProRes Proxy or H.264 copies at reduced quality. Look for the originals inside the library bundle's Original Media folder, on external media storage and on the recording card. If the originals were deleted, scan that card read-only before relinking anything to the proxies.
The situation
Final Cut Pro can play a smaller helper file, while the high-quality original is unavailable.
Final Cut Pro can switch the whole browser between proxy and optimized or original media with one setting, which is why an edit keeps playing while the masters are gone. What remains is a lightweight transcode meant for cutting, not for output.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Proxy files live in the library bundle or in an external media folder, separate from the originals, and they survive a cleanup that removes camera files because they are smaller and look like working data. Cards emptied after the shoot, an external drive tidied to free space, or an event moved without its original media each leave the proxies as the last playable copy.
Proxy and preview locations are separate from camera originals and contain less information. For Final Cut Pro, this matters because Final Cut Pro can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Copy the whole library and its proxy media to a second drive first, because that copy is currently the only version of the finished edit.
- 2
Switch the viewer to original or optimized media so the browser marks the clips that are genuinely missing, then note their filenames and source.
- 3
Look inside the library bundle under Original Media, then on the external media drives and the camera card, and copy any originals you find off first.
- 4
For originals that are really deleted, scan the camera card read-only, export to another disk and relink the clips to the recovered files.
Do not render a final master while proxy playback is active, and do not delete proxy media to save space before the originals are back. A proxy render carries the lower resolution into the export, and nothing restores the detail afterwards.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Recovery works on the camera card, not inside the library: File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media read-only, while an APFS library disk stays out of reach. A proxy can never be converted back into camera quality.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Originals are in place when the browser shows no missing media with proxy playback switched off, the inspector reports the camera codec and full frame size, and a short test export matches the resolution the delivery requires rather than the proxy size.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can Final Cut Pro workflow be recovered in this situation?+
Final Cut Pro can switch the whole browser between proxy and optimized or original media with one setting, which is why an edit keeps playing while the masters are gone. What remains is a lightweight transcode meant for cutting, not for output. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not render a final master while proxy playback is active, and do not delete proxy media to save space before the originals are back.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
