Shoot backup missing: identify the original source first

What should I do when a shoot backup is missing?

Short answer

First find out which copy is actually gone: a mislabeled card, an incomplete ingest, a moved folder or a deleted backup copy each point to a different source to protect. Inventory every card and backup drive by filename range, keep camera originals unformatted and scan only the one source confirmed as missing.

The situation

The expected second copy cannot be found after a production day.

The wording says backup, but the first question is which copy is actually gone. A missing backup with an intact camera original is an annoyance; a deleted original with an unverified backup is the serious case, and the two demand opposite first moves.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Production days lose copies in ordinary ways: a card was marked as ingested but never was, a copy ran out of space and stopped quietly, a folder was moved into another project during cleanup, or the backup drive was wiped for the next job. Each of those leaves a different medium as the last remaining source, and that source must stop being written to.

A mislabeled card, incomplete ingest, moved folder, or deleted destination copy each changes which source should be protected first.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Put every card and every backup drive from the production on the table and stop all further writing to each of them.

  2. 2

Match the file-number ranges on each card against the folders on each drive, so the copy that is genuinely missing becomes visible.

  3. 3

Scan only the confirmed source read-only, whether that is an unformatted camera card or the volume the copy was deleted from.

  4. 4

Export to a third location, rebuild the folder structure of the shoot, and verify the file count for each camera separately.

Avoid this now

Do not start a rescue copy over the same destination, and do not format a card because it appears to have been ingested already. Avoid resuming a stalled copy job, which can overwrite a partial file with an even shorter one.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

What can be recovered depends on the medium: exFAT and NTFS volumes can be scanned read-only, while a deleted copy on an SSD may already be cleared by TRIM. File Recovery Hero reads neither APFS nor ext4 backup drives and cannot restore from a cloud account.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The inventory is closed when every camera roll appears once per destination with the same file count and the same last file number. Open a clip or frame from each roll and check duration or resolution, since a stalled copy leaves short files with correct names.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera cards and backup drives be recovered in this situation?+

The wording says backup, but the first question is which copy is actually gone. A missing backup with an intact camera original is an annoyance; a deleted original with an unverified backup is the serious case, and the two demand opposite first moves. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not start a rescue copy over the same destination, and do not format a card because it appears to have been ingested already.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The inventory is closed when every camera roll appears once per destination with the same file count and the same last file number.
