Recover deleted OM System ORF files

How do I recover deleted ORF photos?

Short answer

First take the card out and shoot nothing more, then scan it read-only for ORF. The ORF signature identifies the format, but a photo only counts as recovered when its full sensor data and internal offsets are intact. Export to another drive and develop each ORF completely, for example in OM Workspace.

The situation

ORF originals were deleted before transfer.

ORF is the Olympus and OM System RAW format, and its signature makes a candidate easy for a scan to spot. Spotting is not recovering: the picture only exists if the sensor data and the internal offsets pointing at it both survived intact.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The files were erased before they reached a computer, typically during in-camera review or with an erase-all after a session that seemed to have been copied. The exFAT card holds no recycle bin, so the entries went at once. The ORF bodies are still in those clusters, and every further exposure claims part of that space.

An ORF signature can identify the format, but complete sensor data and offsets are still required.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Switch the camera off, take the card out and shoot nothing further, not even a frame to confirm the body still works.

  2. 2

Note how many ORF files the session produced and the last frame number you still have, to measure the result against.

  3. 3

Mount the card read-only in a reader and scan the exFAT volume for ORF, declining any prompt to check or fix the card.

  4. 4

Export the results to a computer drive and open them in a converter that handles the format, such as OM Workspace.

Avoid this now

Do not put the card back in the camera to see whether the pictures come back, and do not let the operating system repair the volume. Copying recovered ORF files onto the same card is the other mistake, because it overwrites the ones not yet recovered.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Only what is physically still on the card can be exported. ORF files partly overwritten by later shooting return unusable, and File Recovery Hero does not repair individual RAW files or restore the filenames the deleted directory entries carried.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Develop each file rather than viewing it. A complete ORF opens at the sensor's full resolution, responds to exposure and shadow adjustments across the entire frame, and still carries its shooting data. A file that shows only a small fixed image, or greys out below a certain line, is incomplete.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can OM System exFAT photo card be recovered in this situation?+

ORF is the Olympus and OM System RAW format, and its signature makes a candidate easy for a scan to spot. Spotting is not recovering: the picture only exists if the sensor data and the internal offsets pointing at it both survived intact. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not put the card back in the camera to see whether the pictures come back, and do not let the operating system repair the volume.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Develop each file rather than viewing it.
