Recover deleted OM System MOV clips

Can deleted OM System MOV video be recovered?

Short answer

Yes, often, as long as you have not filmed or shot since: stills and clips share the same card space, so even new photos can overwrite deleted MOV data. Scan the card read-only for MOV, export to another drive and check each clip's streams, duration and complete demux before trusting it in an edit.

The situation

MOV recordings were deleted or skipped during ingest.

MOV clips from an OM System body share the card with the stills, so every frame shot after noticing the loss competes for exactly the blocks the video occupied. Deleted clips and clips skipped during ingest look identical in the folder listing; only the card itself shows which it was.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A MOV is a QuickTime container: sample tables and track headers describe where the picture and sound data lie, and a player needs both. Deleting a clip releases the directory entry while those boxes and the media extent usually remain intact in unallocated space. An ingest that skipped a file leaves it fully present on the card, which is why the folder listing deserves a careful second look.

QuickTime container boxes and the media extent must remain coherent.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Power the camera down, remove the card and stop shooting stills as well; photographs overwrite video blocks just as effectively.

  2. 2

Go through the ingest folder and the editing project's media bin for clip numbers that were imported but never linked.

  3. 3

Mount the card read-only in a reader and scan it for MOV, so that the container boxes and the media data are lifted together.

  4. 4

Export the clips to a separate drive and play each one from beginning to end before rebuilding the timeline.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera repair the card, and do not record a short test clip to check that the slot still works. Both write over the media extent of the deleted recordings. Never run a video repair tool against the card itself; work on an exported copy instead.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card without writing to it and exports complete MOV files; it does not rebuild a clip whose sample tables were overwritten, and it does not repair damaged video. A recording the camera never finished closing may have no usable structure left.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A clip is usable when a player reports the expected duration, lists both the video and the audio track, and decodes without stalling to the final second. Scrub to the end rather than trusting the first frame; a truncated MOV often opens normally and then stops mid-clip.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can OM System exFAT MOV card be recovered in this situation?+

MOV clips from an OM System body share the card with the stills, so every frame shot after noticing the loss competes for exactly the blocks the video occupied. Deleted clips and clips skipped during ingest look identical in the folder listing; only the card itself shows which it was. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera repair the card, and do not record a short test clip to check that the slot still works.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A clip is usable when a player reports the expected duration, lists both the video and the audio track, and decodes without stalling to the final second.
