Emergency · camera card shown as RAW

SD card appears as RAW or unformatted

What does it mean when Windows labels an SD card RAW?

Short answer

It is not a camera format but a Windows status: the partition exists, yet Windows cannot identify its file system because the metadata is damaged or unsupported. Do not format the card or run CHKDSK. Image the physical card and check whether exFAT structures remain that a read-only scan can use.

The situation

Disk Management sees a partition but cannot identify its file system.

RAW is how Windows says it found a partition but no file system it can interpret. The camera never wrote anything called RAW to the card: the label describes the state of the volume metadata, and the recordings themselves are a separate layer underneath.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

An exFAT card keeps a boot sector at the start and a backup copy further in. If the primary one is damaged, by a bad eject, a power cut during a write or a partition table that no longer matches the card, Windows falls back to RAW. The directory and the media clusters can still be complete.

RAW is a Windows status, not a camera file format; the volume metadata may be damaged or unsupported.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Close every dialog that offers to format the card and unplug it if an automatic repair is about to start.

  2. 2

Open Disk Management once and note the reported capacity and partition layout, without assigning a letter or initialising the disk.

  3. 3

Image the physical card, not the RAW volume, so the scan can also look at areas outside the partition.

  4. 4

Search that image read-only for exFAT structures and for the camera formats, then export the results to a different disk.

Avoid this now

Do not run CHKDSK on a RAW volume, and do not accept the offer to initialise the disk in Disk Management. A repair pass writes new metadata over structures it has misread, and initialising replaces the partition table, which makes the surviving exFAT copy much harder to find.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A RAW status can also mean the card is failing electrically, and that belongs in a lab. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16 or FAT32 structures read-only, plus uncompressed images of them; it does not rewrite a boot sector to make the card mount again.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

If the scan reconstructs the exFAT directory, folder names and filenames come back as the camera wrote them, which is the strongest sign the structure was only damaged, not overwritten. Open a sample from several folders and check sizes, dates and full playback.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera card shown as RAW be recovered in this situation?+

RAW is how Windows says it found a partition but no file system it can interpret. The camera never wrote anything called RAW to the card: the label describes the state of the volume metadata, and the recordings themselves are a separate layer underneath. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run CHKDSK on a RAW volume, and do not accept the offer to initialise the disk in Disk Management.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

If the scan reconstructs the exFAT directory, folder names and filenames come back as the camera wrote them, which is the strongest sign the structure was only damaged, not overwritten.
