Emergency · SDXC card on macOS
Finder shows an empty SD card
Why does Finder show no files on my SD card?
Short answer
Often it is the wrong mount or hidden content, not deleted files: check the volume name and capacity in Disk Utility and press Command-Shift-Period to show hidden items. If the files are really absent, do not run First Aid. Create an image or scan the exFAT card read-only instead.
The situation
The card appears in Finder, yet expected camera folders or files are not visible.
On macOS two harmless things imitate data loss: Finder hiding dot-files and camera folders, and a second volume mounting under a similar name. Both are checked in Disk Utility and with one keyboard shortcut, before any repair function is even considered.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
macOS mounts an exFAT card automatically and shows it in the sidebar whether or not its directory is healthy. If the directory entries under DCIM were released or a cluster in the chain is damaged, Finder simply has nothing to list. The volume metadata that makes the card mount at all is a separate structure and often intact.
Finder may be showing a different mount, hidden content, or intact volume metadata with deleted directory entries.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Press Command-Shift-Period in the card window to reveal hidden items, and check whether DCIM or a manufacturer folder appears.
- 2
Open Disk Utility, switch to Show All Devices and confirm the volume name, the capacity and that the format really is exFAT.
- 3
Leave First Aid alone and either scan the card read-only or create an uncompressed disk image of it with Disk Utility.
- 4
Export the recovered material to the internal drive of the Mac, never back to the card you are reading from.
Do not run First Aid on the card and do not let macOS erase and reformat it as exFAT to make it usable again. First Aid writes corrected file-system structures onto the source, and that is the one place the missing entries could still be found.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
This path assumes an exFAT or FAT32 card. File Recovery Hero runs on macOS and reads those file systems plus NTFS and uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images; an APFS or HFS+ volume and a card that refuses to mount at all are outside it.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Quick Look is not enough, because it can render an embedded preview from a broken file. Open each recovered item in Preview or a player, check that photographs reach their full pixel height and that the total exported size is in the range the card reported as used.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can SDXC card on macOS be recovered in this situation?+
On macOS two harmless things imitate data loss: Finder hiding dot-files and camera folders, and a second volume mounting under a similar name. Both are checked in Disk Utility and with one keyboard shortcut, before any repair function is even considered. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not run First Aid on the card and do not let macOS erase and reformat it as exFAT to make it usable again.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Quick Look is not enough, because it can render an embedded preview from a broken file.
