Emergency · camera card and macOS Image Capture destination

Photos missing after Image Capture import

What can I do when Image Capture did not import every photo?

Short answer

First check the import folder selected in Image Capture and search it for the missing filename range. A disconnect, duplicate handling or the delete-after-import option can explain the gap. If the originals are also gone from the card, stop using it and scan it read-only before importing again.

The situation

Apple Image Capture copied part of a card, but the expected count or file range is incomplete.

Image Capture copies with very little feedback: it shows a destination folder, a delete-after-import option and a progress bar, and nothing else. A gap in the imported range therefore has to be reconstructed from the folder it wrote to and from the filenames the camera assigned.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The destination in Image Capture is remembered from the last session, so imports often land in Pictures, in Downloads or in a folder chosen months earlier. The connection is the second weak point: a camera going to sleep, a cable knocked loose or a battery running down ends the transfer silently. With the delete option active, files already copied are removed from the card as the import proceeds.

A disconnect, destination choice, duplicate rule, or post-import deletion can leave a gap.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Open Image Capture again and read the Import To folder it currently shows, then look into exactly that folder.

  2. 2

Search the Mac by filename range with Spotlight set to include system locations, since a copy may sit outside your usual picture library.

  3. 3

Disconnect the camera and take the card out, so a sleeping camera cannot restart an import or write anything further.

  4. 4

Read the card in a card reader and scan it read-only, then export to a folder that Image Capture does not use.

Avoid this now

Do not connect the camera by cable again while the delete-after-import setting is on, and do not let the Photos app open and start its own import. Both continue the process that created the gap, and the camera writes to the card each time it is woken.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Photos that were copied to the Mac and then deleted from its internal SSD are usually gone for good, since TRIM releases those blocks quickly. File Recovery Hero targets the card instead, reading exFAT and FAT media read-only on macOS.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Line the imported filenames up as a sequence and look for the break: camera numbering is consecutive, so the gap is visible at a glance. Each file in the recovered range then has to open at full resolution in Preview, not merely appear as a thumbnail in the Finder.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera card and macOS Image Capture destination be recovered in this situation?+

Image Capture copies with very little feedback: it shows a destination folder, a delete-after-import option and a progress bar, and nothing else. A gap in the imported range therefore has to be reconstructed from the folder it wrote to and from the filenames the camera assigned. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not connect the camera by cable again while the delete-after-import setting is on, and do not let the Photos app open and start its own import.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Line the imported filenames up as a sequence and look for the break: camera numbering is consecutive, so the gap is visible at a glance.
