Why are only my newest camera photos missing?
Short answer
Most likely the last directory update or import failed, while earlier entries had already been saved. Note the last visible filename and capture time so the missing range is clearly defined. Then stop shooting on that card, scan it read-only for JPEG and your camera's RAW format, and check the finds against that range.

Work out what actually disappeared
Cameras buffer and write in bursts, and the directory entry follows the image data. If the card was pulled or the battery died while the buffer was still emptying, the last frames exist on the card without an entry pointing at them. An import that was set to delete after copying produces the same picture, except that the files then sit on the computer.

Count the recovered frames against the range you wrote down, then check the capture times in the metadata: they should continue the series without a gap. Each image must open at full resolution, since a frame interrupted mid-write often displays its top half and grey below.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.
