GoPro last clip unfinalized after battery loss

Can the final GoPro clip be recovered after power loss?

Short answer

Often in part, and earlier chapters of the same take are usually unaffected: only the chapter being written when power failed lacks its final ISO-BMFF metadata. Take the card out before switching the camera on again, recover the raw extent of that chapter to another drive, repair a copy and play the repaired stream to the end.

The situation

The last MP4 is absent or unplayable after the camera shut down.

Only the chapter that was open when the battery died is affected. The camera writes picture and sound continuously but adds the ISO-BMFF index at the moment it closes a file, so everything recorded earlier in the same take remains perfectly playable.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Power failed, the housing got wet, or the camera overheated and shut down mid-recording. The bytes that had already been flushed to the card are there; the structure describing where each frame begins is not. The result is a file of zero length, a file that no player will open, or a chapter that never appears in the folder listing.

The camera may not have written final ISO-BMFF metadata before power failed.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Fit a fresh battery only after removing the card, because a GoPro that boots with the card inside can write recovery files over the extent.

  2. 2

Copy the earlier chapters of the same take to a computer first; they are intact and give you a reference for the repair later.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only and export the raw extent of the unfinished chapter to another drive, regardless of whether it plays.

  4. 4

Duplicate that export and let a video repair tool rebuild the index on the duplicate, using an intact chapter of the same take as the template.

Avoid this now

Do not switch the camera on with the card inserted, and do not let it offer to fix the card. Running a repair tool directly on the card, or on your only export, removes the chance to try a second approach if the first attempt produces a broken file.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Whatever was still in the camera buffer when power failed never reached the card and cannot be recovered. File Recovery Hero reads the card and exports the extent read-only; rebuilding the ISO-BMFF index is the job of a repair tool working on a duplicate.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Play the repaired chapter all the way through and watch for the picture continuing at the same quality as the earlier chapters. The clip will end earlier than expected, which is normal, but it should not freeze in the middle or lose audio while the picture continues.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can GoPro MP4 card be recovered in this situation?+

Only the chapter that was open when the battery died is affected. The camera writes picture and sound continuously but adds the ISO-BMFF index at the moment it closes a file, so everything recorded earlier in the same take remains perfectly playable. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not switch the camera on with the card inserted, and do not let it offer to fix the card.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Play the repaired chapter all the way through and watch for the picture continuing at the same quality as the earlier chapters.
