Camera created a new DCIM folder and older files vanished

Why did my camera create a new folder and stop showing older files?

Short answer

Usually the new folder is normal rollover after the previous folder reached its file limit or numbering was reset, so older files should still sit in the earlier folder. If that folder itself is missing, its directory entry was lost. Keep the card tree unchanged and scan read-only for the missing range.

The situation

A new numbered DCIM subfolder appears while recordings from the prior folder are missing.

A fresh DCIM subfolder is normal camera behaviour: each folder holds a limited number of files, and the camera opens the next one when that limit is reached or the numbering is reset. The earlier folder should still be sitting next to it on the card.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Two different things can hide the older pictures. Playback on the camera may simply be filtering to the current folder, in which case everything is still there. Or the directory entry of the previous folder was lost, after a bad eject or an interrupted write, and then the files exist as data without a folder to list them.

Folder rollover is normal at device limits, but a lost prior directory entry or card reset can hide an earlier group.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Put the card in a reader and look at the whole DCIM tree on a computer instead of judging by the camera display.

  2. 2

Note which folder numbers exist and which range of filenames is absent, so the scan has a concrete target.

  3. 3

Copy the folders that are present to a drive first, then scan the card read-only for the missing JPEG, RAW or video range.

  4. 4

Export the hits to the same drive and sort them by capture date to rebuild the order the folders once had.

Avoid this now

Do not delete the new folder to tidy the card, and do not keep shooting while an older folder is unaccounted for. New recordings go into the free space the lost folder occupied, and deleting folders on the camera changes exactly the structures a scan needs.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A recovered folder rarely comes back as a folder: the files return, the DCIM tree does not, so they arrive sorted by type or date. File Recovery Hero reads the exFAT card read-only, and it cannot restore camera folder numbering or the original file names in every case.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Check the count first: the recovered files plus the ones still in place should cover the full filename range without holes. Then open pictures from the beginning and the end of the missing block at full size and confirm the capture dates fit the shoot.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera SDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

A fresh DCIM subfolder is normal camera behaviour: each folder holds a limited number of files, and the camera opens the next one when that limit is reached or the numbering is reset. The earlier folder should still be sitting next to it on the card. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not delete the new folder to tidy the card, and do not keep shooting while an older folder is unaccounted for.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Check the count first: the recovered files plus the ones still in place should cover the full filename range without holes.

Stop! Your files aregone.Back!

Scan for free first, then decide.
