Older files disappeared after new recording
Why did older files disappear after I recorded new media?
Short answer
Often because the new recording reused their space: loop recording deletes the oldest files on purpose, and a counterfeit card can overwrite old data once its real capacity runs out. Overwritten parts cannot come back. Stop recording now, check loop settings, file numbering and true capacity, then scan read-only.
The situation
New clips are present but earlier photos or takes have vanished.
New material present and older material gone points at reuse rather than at a fault. Loop recording removes the oldest files by design, and a card that claims more capacity than it has starts writing over its own beginning once the real flash is full.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Dashcams, action cameras and many drones default to loop mode, which deletes the oldest clip whenever space runs short; that is a setting, not damage. Counterfeit cards behave worse: the controller reports a capacity the flash does not have, so writes beyond the real size wrap around and destroy earlier data while every file still appears in the listing.
New allocation can overwrite deleted entries, expose counterfeit capacity, or replace the oldest loop-recorded files.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Stop recording immediately, because in loop mode the device keeps deleting older material for as long as it runs.
- 2
Check the loop or overwrite setting in the device menu and note whether the file numbering restarted or simply continued.
- 3
Compare the capacity the card reports with the size printed on it, and with the total size of the files it actually holds.
- 4
Scan the card read-only for the recorded formats and export to another disk, treating each find as a candidate until it plays.
Do not keep the device running to see whether the files come back, and do not reformat a suspicious card to test its capacity. If the card is counterfeit, further writing destroys more of what the flash still holds.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
What a later recording physically replaced is gone, whether loop mode or a counterfeit controller caused it, and no software reads data that no longer exists. Replace a card that misreports its capacity instead of continuing to record on it.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
On a counterfeit card the giveaway is in playback, not in the listing: files beyond the real capacity open and then break into noise or stop early. Play each recovered file to the end, and check that its timestamp belongs to the period you are missing.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can camera card be recovered in this situation?+
New material present and older material gone points at reuse rather than at a fault. Loop recording removes the oldest files by design, and a card that claims more capacity than it has starts writing over its own beginning once the real flash is full. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not keep the device running to see whether the files come back, and do not reformat a suspicious card to test its capacity.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
On a counterfeit card the giveaway is in playback, not in the listing: files beyond the real capacity open and then break into noise or stop early.
