Emergency · dual-slot camera card set
Files missing from one dual-slot camera card
What should I check when one dual-slot card is incomplete?
Short answer
First check the camera's slot settings: in relay, backup or split mode, photos, video, RAW and JPEG can land on different cards by design. Keep both cards unchanged, compare filename ranges on each, and scan read-only only the card that should hold the missing files according to those settings.
The situation
One card lacks files that may exist on the second slot, depending on relay, backup, or split-media settings.
With two slots the camera decides where each file lands, and that decision is a menu setting rather than an accident. Relay, backup and split modes distribute photos, video, RAW and JPEG differently, so a card can look incomplete while nothing at all has been lost.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
In relay mode the camera fills slot one and continues on slot two, so a shoot is split across both. In backup mode each card should hold everything, and a difference points to a write problem on one of them. In split mode RAW goes to one card and JPEG or video to the other. The setting in use determines which card should hold the missing files.
The camera can assign photos, video, RAW, JPEG, or overflow differently across slots.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Take both cards out and keep them together; do not reuse either one until the comparison is done.
- 2
Read the slot recording setting from the camera menu and write down which card was supposed to receive which files.
- 3
List both cards on a computer side by side and compare filename ranges and capture times to see where the gap really is.
- 4
Scan read-only only the card that should hold the missing range, and export its results to a drive separate from both cards.
Do not format the seemingly empty card to reuse it, and do not put either card back in the camera before both are listed. In backup mode the second card is the only surviving copy, and in relay mode the apparently unused card holds the later half of the shoot.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
If both cards were reused after the shoot, the later recordings sit where the missing files were, and that is beyond any scan. File Recovery Hero reads each card separately, read-only, on exFAT or FAT structures; it does not know the camera slot logic.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Put the contents of both cards into one folder listing sorted by capture time; the shoot is complete when that combined timeline has no gaps. In backup mode also compare file sizes pair by pair, because a short file on one card marks an interrupted write.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can dual-slot camera card set be recovered in this situation?+
With two slots the camera decides where each file lands, and that decision is a menu setting rather than an accident. Relay, backup and split modes distribute photos, video, RAW and JPEG differently, so a card can look incomplete while nothing at all has been lost. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not format the seemingly empty card to reuse it, and do not put either card back in the camera before both are listed.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Put the contents of both cards into one folder listing sorted by capture time; the shoot is complete when that combined timeline has no gaps.
