Emergency · exFAT SDXC card

SD card uses space but shows no files

Why does my SD card show used space but no files?

Short answer

Usually because the data is still there without visible directory entries: occupied clusters can belong to hidden or orphaned files. Write down the used and total capacity figures, do not run a repair or format, and scan the card read-only so the allocation state is checked before anything changes it.

The situation

The operating system reports substantial used capacity while the visible folders are empty.

A used-capacity figure comes from the allocation bitmap, while the empty folder view comes from the directory. When the two disagree, the clusters are still marked as occupied and the entries that named them are missing or hidden, which is a far better position than an empty card.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Three explanations fit this picture. The files may simply be hidden, because a camera or a virus set the hidden attribute on the DCIM folder. The directory may be damaged, leaving orphaned clusters that belong to files nothing points at any more. Or a device wrote a second structure over the old one, so an outdated directory is being read against current data.

Allocated clusters may still belong to hidden or orphaned files even when directory entries are missing.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Write down the used and total capacity exactly as the system reports them; those two numbers are the evidence that data is still allocated.

  2. 2

Switch on the display of hidden and system files in the file browser and look again before assuming anything is lost.

  3. 3

If the folders stay empty, scan the card read-only so the allocation state is read directly instead of through the broken directory.

  4. 4

Export the finds to another drive and compare their combined size against the used capacity you noted at the start.

Avoid this now

Do not run the repair command the operating system suggests for an inconsistent volume, and do not let a device rebuild the card. Those tools reconcile the directory with the allocation state by discarding what they cannot attribute, which is exactly the data in question.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

If the used space turns out to belong to a file system the software cannot read, such as APFS, HFS+ or ext4, this route ends there: File Recovery Hero covers exFAT, NTFS and FAT16 or FAT32 volumes only.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The numbers are the first check: if the exported files add up to roughly the used capacity, the occupied clusters have been accounted for. Then open the material itself, because orphaned clusters can also belong to partial files that look plausible in a listing and fail on playback.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT SDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

A used-capacity figure comes from the allocation bitmap, while the empty folder view comes from the directory. When the two disagree, the clusters are still marked as occupied and the entries that named them are missing or hidden, which is a far better position than an empty card. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run the repair command the operating system suggests for an inconsistent volume, and do not let a device rebuild the card.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The numbers are the first check: if the exported files add up to roughly the used capacity, the occupied clusters have been accounted for.
