Nikon NEF RAW: recover after a quick format

Can deleted Nikon NEF originals be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often yes, as long as the camera took no new pictures after formatting. A quick format writes fresh file-system records, but NEF data remains until overwritten. Eject the card without a test frame. Note which RAW compression was set, so you can judge whether the sizes of recovered files look plausible.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous deleted Nikon NEF originals is missing.

A quick format leaves the raw files where they are and replaces only the records that name them. The camera then shows an empty card, yet a signature scan can still reach the frames, as long as no new picture has been stored on it since.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Formatting in the body writes fresh exFAT structures and a new folder layout; the frames themselves are untouched. What is lost is the assignment of names and numbers, so recovered files appear in the order the scan found them. Knowing which compression was set helps, because it tells you which file sizes are plausible.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For Nikon NEF RAW, this matters because NEF uses TIFF-based directories with Nikon metadata, previews and compressed or uncompressed sensor data.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card immediately and do not take a test frame to see whether the camera accepts it again.

  2. 2

Write down the body, the compression mode and how many frames the shoot contained, so the yield can be judged afterwards.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only from a reader for NEF signatures across its full capacity, not merely inside the new folder.

  4. 4

Export the frames to another drive, sort them by capture time and give them names that match the shoot again.

Avoid this now

Do not shoot on the card and do not run a second format because the first one seemed to fail. The free space after a format is exactly where the raw frames lie, and both of those actions place new data directly on top of them.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Names, folder numbers and any ratings set in the camera do not survive a format. File Recovery Hero reads the formatted exFAT card without writing to it and exports after licensing; frames already covered by new pictures cannot be produced by any scan.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Without the original numbering, the picture has to decide. Each NEF must develop at full resolution with plausible colour, and the file sizes should sit in the range your compression setting produces; a frame far below that range lost part of its sensor data.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Nikon exFAT card be recovered in this situation?+

A quick format leaves the raw files where they are and replaces only the records that name them. The camera then shows an empty card, yet a signature scan can still reach the frames, as long as no new picture has been stored on it since. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not shoot on the card and do not run a second format because the first one seemed to fail.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Without the original numbering, the picture has to decide.

Stop! Your files aregone.Back!

Scan for free first, then decide.
