proxy and camera-original MP4: recover after deletion
How can I recover missing camera originals with surviving proxies after deletion?
Short answer
Only the camera originals need recovery, not the proxies: surviving proxy files are small copies for editing and cannot replace full-resolution footage. Keep the proxy folder as a list of what existed, stop using the card and scan it read-only for the original MP4 clips, matching them by name and duration.
The situation
missing camera originals with surviving proxies no longer appears in its recording folder even though the storage device is still detected.
The proxy folder surviving is not the same as the footage surviving. Proxies are small editing copies made alongside the shoot, so they keep playing while the deleted full-resolution MP4 originals sit unreferenced in the free space of the same card.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Deleting a clip on an exFAT card frees the directory entry and marks the blocks reusable; the frames stay put until something writes over them. Windows keeps no recycle bin for removable media, so nothing is waiting there. Because originals are many times larger than proxies, they occupy far more of the space a new recording would claim first.
Deletion can release a directory reference before later writes reuse every block that belonged to the file. For proxy and camera-original MP4, this matters because small proxy files can survive in a separate folder while high-resolution originals are absent
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Stop filming immediately and take the card out of the camera; every further second of recording claims blocks that held the deleted originals.
- 2
List the proxy folder first and use it as an inventory: clip names, durations and shot order tell you exactly which originals must reappear.
- 3
Connect the card through a reader and scan the exFAT volume read-only with File Recovery Hero, leaving the proxy files untouched on the card.
- 4
Export hits to an internal disk or external SSD, then match each recovered MP4 to its proxy by duration before deleting anything.
Do not copy the proxies back onto the card for safekeeping, and do not let the camera rebuild its database or create a test clip. Writing anything to the same card is what turns recoverable originals into gaps that no scan can fill.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media only, never APFS, HFS+ or a physically damaged card. Originals whose blocks were already reused come back partial, and nothing can rebuild them from a proxy. Scanning costs nothing; exporting needs the 50 € license.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Count first: one recovered original for every proxy, with matching durations. Then open two or three of the largest files, jump to the final minute and check that the picture holds up. A recovered original should be far bigger than its proxy; if the sizes are similar, you exported the proxy again.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can camera and proxy media be recovered in this situation?+
The proxy folder surviving is not the same as the footage surviving. Proxies are small editing copies made alongside the shoot, so they keep playing while the deleted full-resolution MP4 originals sit unreferenced in the free space of the same card. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not copy the proxies back onto the card for safekeeping, and do not let the camera rebuild its database or create a test clip.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Count first: one recovered original for every proxy, with matching durations.
