Recovered photo opens but metadata is missing

Is a recovered photo usable when EXIF metadata is gone?

Short answer

Usually yes, if the image decodes at its full dimensions without grey or shifted areas. EXIF blocks can be damaged or dropped while the pixel data survives. Keep the unchanged recovered file as your reference, then add capture time, camera or orientation only on a copy, for example from neighbouring frames of the same shoot.

The situation

The image decodes, but capture time, camera, lens, or orientation data is absent.

Missing EXIF and intact pixels are two separate questions. The metadata block sits in its own part of the file and can be damaged or lost while the image data behind it decodes perfectly, so a photograph without a capture time can still be completely usable.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Capture time, camera, lens and orientation live in a metadata segment near the front of the file. Recovery that had to derive file boundaries sometimes keeps the image data and loses that segment, and some cameras write parts of it only when the file is closed properly. Orientation is the most visible loss, since the picture then appears rotated in viewers that trust the flag.

Metadata blocks can be damaged or omitted even when pixel data remains viewable.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Check first whether the image itself is complete, at its full dimensions and free of grey or shifted areas.

  2. 2

Keep the recovered file exactly as exported and treat it as the reference version from this point on.

  3. 3

Take capture time and camera data from neighbouring frames of the same shoot, which bracket the missing moment closely.

  4. 4

Write the reconstructed metadata to a copy of the file and leave the original export untouched for comparison.

Avoid this now

Do not let a photo application write metadata straight into the only recovered file, and do not fix the rotation by re-encoding it. Both operations rewrite the file, and if the assumed values turn out wrong, no untouched version is left to fall back on.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero exports recovered files from readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media without altering them; it writes no metadata and cannot restore an EXIF block whose bytes are gone. Exports it could not confirm are marked UNVERIFIED and need checking before archiving.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The picture is usable when it decodes at its original dimensions without artefacts. The metadata work is done when the copy carries a plausible capture time, the correct orientation and the right camera entry, and every reconstructed field is marked as reconstructed in your catalogue.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can recovered JPEG or RAW file be recovered in this situation?+

Missing EXIF and intact pixels are two separate questions. The metadata block sits in its own part of the file and can be damaged or lost while the image data behind it decodes perfectly, so a photograph without a capture time can still be completely usable. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let a photo application write metadata straight into the only recovered file, and do not fix the rotation by re-encoding it.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The picture is usable when it decodes at its original dimensions without artefacts.
