Contact sheet shows a photo whose original is missing

Can a contact-sheet preview help recover the original photo?

Short answer

Only indirectly: a contact sheet or thumbnail identifies the image but does not hold its full pixels or RAW sensor data. Use its capture time and sequence number to work out which card held the original. Scan that card read-only, recover the original format and confirm the full-resolution file opens before you rely on it.

The situation

A proof, thumbnail, or contact sheet identifies the image but no full original can be located.

A contact sheet is evidence, not a copy. It shows that the frame existed, when it was taken and where it sits in the sequence, while holding a reduced rendering and none of the original sensor or pixel data. That evidence is what points you at the right card.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Proof sheets, catalogue previews and exported thumbnails are generated from the original at import time and then live independently of it. When the original is deleted or its card reused, the preview stays in the catalogue and keeps its metadata: capture time, frame number and often the volume name of the medium it came from. That is what a targeted scan needs.

The preview preserves visual identification, not the complete pixels or RAW sensor data.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Read the capture time, the frame number and any recorded volume name from the contact sheet or catalogue entry.

  2. 2

Identify which card or drive held that frame and stop using it before anything else happens to the medium.

  3. 3

Scan that medium read-only for the original format, restricting the search to the file type the camera produced.

  4. 4

Export the candidates and match them to the contact sheet by capture time and subject before adopting them as originals.

Avoid this now

Do not upscale the preview and file it as the recovered photograph, and do not let the catalogue purge previews whose originals are missing. Those previews are the only remaining record of the frame, and once purged the search loses its reference points entirely.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero recovers whole files from readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media; it cannot rebuild an original from a preview and does not read APFS or HFS+ catalogues. If the source card was reused for later shoots, the frame may be gone entirely.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The original is back when the exported file opens at the full resolution of the camera, its capture time matches the contact-sheet entry to the second, and the subject is identical. If only a lower-resolution copy appears, the catalogue preview remains the best version in existence.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can photo catalog and source card be recovered in this situation?+

A contact sheet is evidence, not a copy. It shows that the frame existed, when it was taken and where it sits in the sequence, while holding a reduced rendering and none of the original sensor or pixel data. That evidence is what points you at the right card. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not upscale the preview and file it as the recovered photograph, and do not let the catalogue purge previews whose originals are missing.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The original is back when the exported file opens at the full resolution of the camera, its capture time matches the contact-sheet entry to the second, and the subject is identical.
