multicamera MP4 set: recover after an interrupted recording

What can I do with synchronized MP4 clips from several cameras after a recording interruption?

Short answer

Usually only one angle is damaged: when a single camera loses power, the other cameras' clips remain complete. Copy that camera's card and repair its last clip on a copy, with a reference from the same camera. The intact angles and shared audio show exactly which time range the damaged clip must cover.

The situation

synchronized MP4 clips from several cameras is missing, too short or unreadable after power loss, a card error or an unsafe stop.

Usually only the camera that lost power is affected, and the other angles ran on untouched. That makes the case narrower than it looks: the intact cameras and the shared sound show exactly which time range the damaged clip has to cover, and whether repairing it is worth the effort.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

That camera was still writing samples when power failed, so its last clip holds picture and audio but no closing index. The other cameras finished their files normally. In a set this shows up as one angle that ends early or refuses to open, while the same moments are covered from every other position.

The payload may have been written before duration fields, indexes, directory entries or closing structures were committed. For multicamera MP4 set, this matters because matching time ranges, camera IDs and audio references are needed to rebuild the production set

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Switch the affected camera off and take its card out; leave the other cards alone, because their recordings were closed properly.

  2. 2

Copy that card, or at least the unfinished clip, so every repair attempt runs on a duplicate instead of the only file.

  3. 3

Record a reference clip on a different card with the same camera, resolution, frame rate and codec settings for the repair tool.

  4. 4

Repair the copy, then lay the result into the timeline against the intact angles and check that it fills the whole gap.

Avoid this now

Do not let the affected camera repair its own card, and do not try repair tools on the original clip. Reformatting that card because the shoot has to continue removes the last complete version of the damaged angle before anyone has looked at it.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads the cards read-only and recovers files that were deleted or lost from the directory; rebuilding an MP4 whose index was never written is a job for a container repair tool. The undamaged cameras need no recovery at all, only a normal copy.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The angle is back when it starts at the timecode it had before, runs to the point where the other cameras show the take ending, and holds sync with the shared audio across the whole range. Drift that grows towards the end means the rebuilt frame rate is wrong.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can multicamera exFAT cards be recovered in this situation?+

Usually only the camera that lost power is affected, and the other angles ran on untouched. That makes the case narrower than it looks: the intact cameras and the shared sound show exactly which time range the damaged clip has to cover, and whether repairing it is worth the effort. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the affected camera repair its own card, and do not try repair tools on the original clip.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The angle is back when it starts at the timecode it had before, runs to the point where the other cameras show the take ending, and holds sync with the shared audio across the whole range.
