long 4K MP4: recover after a quick format

Can multi-gigabyte 4K MP4 clips be recovered after a quick format?

Short answer

Often partly: after a quick format the clip data remains, but a multi-gigabyte 4K recording without its old directory is harder to reassemble if it was fragmented. Record nothing new. Many cameras split long takes into chapters of at most 4 GB, so recover and check each chapter separately.

The situation

The medium now has a new empty directory, while the previous multi-gigabyte 4K MP4 clips is missing.

The format took a second and emptied the directory; your multi-gigabyte takes were not touched by it. The harder part comes afterwards, because reassembling a very long recording without the old cluster map depends on how contiguously the camera wrote it.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

After a quick format the picture data remains and only the management structures are new. A signature scan finds the start of each MP4 easily; the uncertainty is where it ends. Many cameras help here by splitting long takes into chapters of at most 4 GB, so what you are looking for is often a run of files, not one.

A quick format can replace file-system records without immediately overwriting every older content block. For long 4K MP4, this matters because large clips occupy many clusters and face a higher chance of fragmentation or partial overwriting

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card before recording anything; at 4K bitrates a short test take covers a serious amount of the old material.

  2. 2

Note the duration and bitrate of each missing take, and how many chapter files the camera usually produced for one recording.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only in a reader, or image it first and search the image, keeping the card itself untouched.

  4. 4

Export the chapters to a spare disk, then check each one separately before joining them back into a single timeline.

Avoid this now

Do not reformat or record again, and do not assume a missing chapter means the whole take is gone. Deleting recovered chapter files that look like duplicates is also risky, because consecutive chapters of one recording can be nearly identical in size.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A long take that was fragmented before the format may come back only in pieces, and File Recovery Hero cannot join or repair them: it reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT volumes read-only and exports the files it identifies. Rejoining chapters is a job for your editing software.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Check each chapter on its own: it should play from first to last frame and end where the next one begins, with no gap in the action. Add the chapter lengths together and compare the total against the duration you remember filming.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can high-capacity exFAT card be recovered in this situation?+

The format took a second and emptied the directory; your multi-gigabyte takes were not touched by it. The harder part comes afterwards, because reassembling a very long recording without the old cluster map depends on how contiguously the camera wrote it. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not reformat or record again, and do not assume a missing chapter means the whole take is gone.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Check each chapter on its own: it should play from first to last frame and end where the next one begins, with no gap in the action.
