Emergency · SDXC card on macOS

Mac says the inserted SD card is not readable

What should I do when macOS says the disk is not readable?

Short answer

Never click Initialize: choose Ignore or Eject instead, because initializing writes new file-system metadata onto the card. The message only means macOS cannot interpret the partition or file system. Check in Disk Utility that the physical card shows its correct capacity, then image it or scan it read-only.

The situation

macOS offers Initialize, Ignore, or Eject instead of mounting the camera card.

The dialogue offering Initialize, Ignore and Eject means macOS found a device but no file system it could mount. It says nothing about the data, and Initialize is not a diagnosis but an instruction to write a new, empty structure onto the card.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

macOS reads exFAT and FAT cards happily, so this prompt usually means the partition table or the exFAT boot region is damaged, or the card was written by a device using a layout macOS does not mount. A worn reader can produce the same dialogue by delivering the first sectors incorrectly, which is why the reader is worth swapping before anything is concluded.

The Mac cannot interpret the current partition or file system, but initialization would create new metadata.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Choose Ignore or Eject in the dialogue, never Initialize, and let the card stay attached without being mounted.

  2. 2

Open Disk Utility, switch the view to show all devices, and check whether the physical card appears with its correct capacity.

  3. 3

Try a second card reader before drawing conclusions, because the first sectors are exactly what a failing reader garbles.

  4. 4

With the device visible, image it to another disk or scan it read-only and export the finds to the Mac.

Avoid this now

Do not run First Aid on the card and do not let Disk Utility erase or repartition it. First Aid writes to the volume it examines, and on a card whose structures are already damaged that can replace the last readable references to your files.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

This works while the card is ordinary unencrypted exFAT or FAT storage. File Recovery Hero runs on macOS and reads those volumes and uncompressed images, but not APFS or HFS+ sources, and not a card that Disk Utility cannot see at all.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The first good sign is Disk Utility showing the physical card at its printed capacity even though no volume mounts. After that, each recovered file has to open from the Mac's own disk with the card ejected, at full size, before the card is considered further.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can SDXC card on macOS be recovered in this situation?+

The dialogue offering Initialize, Ignore and Eject means macOS found a device but no file system it could mount. It says nothing about the data, and Initialize is not a diagnosis but an instruction to write a new, empty structure onto the card. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run First Aid on the card and do not let Disk Utility erase or repartition it.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The first good sign is Disk Utility showing the physical card at its printed capacity even though no volume mounts.
