Recover DJI drone MP4 after formatting microSDXC

Can DJI MP4 files be recovered after a card format?

Short answer

Often partly, if the drone has not flown and recorded since: the format rewrote the directory, but parts of older MP4 clips remain until the next flight records over them. Remove the microSDXC card before any test flight, scan it read-only for MP4 on a computer and export the results to another drive.

The situation

Flight clips disappeared after in-device formatting.

Formatting in the aircraft or the app rewrites the exFAT directory on the microSDXC card and marks every cluster as free. The flight footage itself is untouched at that moment. From then on the only thing that destroys it is another recording, which is why the drone must stay grounded.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

The card was formatted in the drone, usually after a card warning or to make room before a flight, and the flight folders disappeared with it. A quick format only rebuilds administrative structures. The danger here is unusual: drone video is written in long continuous runs at high bitrate, so a single further flight can consume a large share of the card in minutes.

A quick format can replace directory metadata while portions of older MP4 extents remain until another flight records over them.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Ground the aircraft and take the microSDXC card out before any further flight, including a short hover to check that the drone still works.

  2. 2

Note how many flights the card held and their approximate durations, so you can tell later whether the recovered footage covers them.

  3. 3

Read the card in a computer card reader, mounted read-only, and scan the whole exFAT volume for MP4 instead of opening folders.

  4. 4

Export to a drive with plenty of free space, because high-bitrate flight clips are large and a partial export is worse than none.

Avoid this now

Do not put the card back in the drone, do not record a test clip on the ground, and do not format again to make the card behave. The DJI app copying cached files onto the card counts as writing too, so keep the card out of the aircraft entirely.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Expect a partial result: the format took the filenames and flight folders with it, so clips return renamed and out of order. Footage already overwritten by later flights is gone, and a card the reader cannot mount needs hardware work rather than a scan.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge each clip by playing it to the end and comparing its running time with the flight it belongs to. Resolution and frame rate should match the settings you flew with. A clip that opens but stops after a few seconds was truncated by the format boundary.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can formatted DJI exFAT microSDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

Formatting in the aircraft or the app rewrites the exFAT directory on the microSDXC card and marks every cluster as free. The flight footage itself is untouched at that moment. From then on the only thing that destroys it is another recording, which is why the drone must stay grounded. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not put the card back in the drone, do not record a test clip on the ground, and do not format again to make the card behave.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Judge each clip by playing it to the end and comparing its running time with the flight it belongs to.
