Emergency · exFAT SDXC card on macOS

Recover an SD card on a Mac without changing the source

How can I recover files from an SD card on macOS?

Short answer

Do not run First Aid: Disk Utility's repair can rewrite metadata on your only source, and a mounted card is not a recovered one. Use Disk Utility just to confirm the card's name, capacity and exFAT format. Then scan the card or a disk image of it read-only and export recoveries to your Mac's internal drive.

The situation

Finder or the camera no longer shows the required media.

On a Mac, mounting and recovering are two different things. Disk Utility can make a card appear and even report it as healthy while the pictures stay invisible, and its repair function changes the source. Use it to identify the card, nothing more.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

An exFAT card mounts on macOS as soon as its volume header is readable, independently of whether the directory still lists the shoot. First Aid checks that directory against the specification and rewrites what it considers wrong, which is useful for a working card and destructive for one that holds your only copy of deleted entries.

Mounting and First Aid are separate from deleted-file recovery; repair may rewrite metadata on the only source.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Open Disk Utility with Show All Devices and note the device entry, its capacity and the exFAT format of the volume below it.

  2. 2

Skip First Aid entirely, and if the card behaves unevenly create a disk image of the device before doing anything else.

  3. 3

Point File Recovery Hero at the card or at that image and run the free scan, which reads and never writes.

  4. 4

Export the findings to the internal drive of the Mac, then eject the card and leave it untouched until the material is checked.

Avoid this now

Do not accept macOS offers to repair or erase the card, and do not let Photos or a backup tool start an automatic import from it. Any of those writes to the source, and Spotlight indexing a mounted card counts as writing too.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero runs on macOS and reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 as well as uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images. An APFS or HFS+ card, an encrypted volume or a card that never mounts is a case for other tools or a laboratory.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Open the exported material from the internal drive in Preview, Photos or a video player and step through it. File sizes should match what the camera writes, and anything exported with an unverified marker should be opened first, because that label means the content could not be confirmed during export.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT SDXC card on macOS be recovered in this situation?+

On a Mac, mounting and recovering are two different things. Disk Utility can make a card appear and even report it as healthy while the pictures stay invisible, and its repair function changes the source. Use it to identify the card, nothing more. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept macOS offers to repair or erase the card, and do not let Photos or a backup tool start an automatic import from it.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Open the exported material from the internal drive in Preview, Photos or a video player and step through it.
