Lightroom Classic: media offline or actually deleted?

Why does Lightroom Classic report media offline?

Short answer

Usually not deleted: Lightroom Classic marks a photo as missing when the catalog's stored path no longer finds the file, often after a drive was renamed or a folder moved outside Lightroom. Click the exclamation mark on the thumbnail to see the previous location, then use Locate. Scan read-only only if the file exists nowhere.

The situation

Lightroom Classic shows a preview or edit decision but cannot open the original media.

A Lightroom Classic catalog holds previews, edit settings and paths, not the photographs themselves. A missing marker therefore reports that the catalog cannot reach a file, and the preview you still see on screen is generated data rather than the raw original.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Photographers move folders in the Finder or Explorer rather than inside Lightroom Classic, and the catalog never learns about it, so entire shoots go missing at once. A card reader that mounts under another letter, an archive drive left unplugged, or files deleted during a cleanup produce the same exclamation marks, even though only the last case is an actual loss.

A changed volume name, missing drive, moved folder and deleted file can trigger similar messages. For Lightroom Classic, this matters because Lightroom Classic can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Back up the catalog file itself before doing anything else, since it carries every develop setting, keyword and collection you have made.

  2. 2

Read the previous path of one missing photo from the catalog and check whether that drive is connected and still carries the same name.

  3. 3

Search the connected drives for the exact filename; when it turns up, point the catalog at the folder so all photos inside it reconnect together.

  4. 4

Only when the raw file exists on no drive, scan the memory card or the drive that held it read-only and export to another disk.

Avoid this now

Do not remove the missing photos from the catalog to clean up the grid, and do not build a new catalog from the remaining files. Removing the entries discards the develop history, which no recovery of the raw file brings back.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Catalogs and previews usually sit on an APFS or HFS+ system disk that File Recovery Hero does not read. It scans exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 cards and external drives read-only, which covers the memory card but not the internal photo library.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The photo is back for real when the exclamation mark disappears after restarting Lightroom Classic, the develop module renders the image at full size rather than from a preview, and the file size matches a raw file from that camera.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Lightroom Classic workflow be recovered in this situation?+

A Lightroom Classic catalog holds previews, edit settings and paths, not the photographs themselves. A missing marker therefore reports that the catalog cannot reach a file, and the preview you still see on screen is generated data rather than the raw original. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not remove the missing photos from the catalog to clean up the grid, and do not build a new catalog from the remaining files.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
