recovered-media validation: use after formatting

How does recovered-media validation help after a quick format?

Short answer

Only validation shows which recoveries after a quick format are really usable: recordings made after formatting may have overwritten parts of older files while names or starts still look fine. Check each export's size, container, streams and full duration against the shot list, and keep the formatted card unused until you are done.

The situation

Old folders are gone while the newly formatted source appears ready to use.

A formatted card that was used again holds two generations of data side by side, and a recovery run cannot always tell them apart. Validation is what separates a file that survived from one whose middle was handed to a newer recording while its opening bytes stayed intact.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

After a format, free space is reassigned from the start of the medium, so the earliest recordings are usually hit first by anything written afterwards. A file recovered from that region may open, show a correct first frame and then collapse. Header, thumbnail and duration can all look right while the payload behind them is new material.

New file-system records and older payload blocks can coexist until later writes reuse them. For recovered-media validation, this matters because reliable validation combines size, container, streams, duration and production context

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the formatted card unused until the review is finished, because a second recovery pass may still be needed.

  2. 2

Write down what was recorded before the format and what was recorded after it, using the shot list or camera counter.

  3. 3

Check each export against that list: size, container, streams and the full running time from beginning to end.

  4. 4

Separate confirmed files from suspect ones in two folders, and mark which ones came from the pre-format period.

Avoid this now

Do not treat a playable first minute as a passed check, and do not hand suspect files to an editor to save time. Material recovered from a reused card fails most often in the middle, and a timeline built on it has to be rebuilt once the fault shows.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

What newer recordings replaced is gone, and checking only shows where. File Recovery Hero repairs no partly overwritten clip and exports such files with the .UNVERIFIED suffix; a dedicated repair tool run on a copy is the next thing worth trying.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A file passes when its size is plausible for its duration, the container reports the video and audio streams the camera writes, playback holds from the first to the last second, and the content matches the scene the shot list names for that timestamp.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can separate export drive be recovered in this situation?+

A formatted card that was used again holds two generations of data side by side, and a recovery run cannot always tell them apart. Validation is what separates a file that survived from one whose middle was handed to a newer recording while its opening bytes stayed intact. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not treat a playable first minute as a passed check, and do not hand suspect files to an editor to save time.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
