Emergency · video recording card

Last video missing after sudden power loss

How can I recover the final clip after a power interruption?

Short answer

Often the data is on the card, but the clip is unfinalized: the camera had no time to write the moov metadata or the directory entry. Preserve the card, scan it read-only for the MP4 or MOV container, and run a repair tool only on the recovered copy, ideally with an intact reference clip.

The situation

Every prior clip is visible, but the final recording never appeared or will not open.

Earlier takes being present is the useful signal here: the card was working and the camera was writing normally until the cut. The final recording is the only unresolved item, and it can be absent from the listing, present but unplayable, or both at once.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

MP4 and MOV keep their index in the moov area, which many cameras write only when a recording is stopped properly. Cut the power first and the audio and video samples are on the card while the map that describes them is not. A directory entry that was never committed hides the same data a second way.

The camera may not have written final container metadata or committed the directory entry before power failed.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the card out of the camera and do not start a new recording on it, not even a short test clip.

  2. 2

Write down the clip numbering of the last successful take and the approximate length of the missing one from the shooting notes.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only through a reader for the container the camera records, and export every candidate of roughly that length to a separate drive.

  4. 4

Copy an intact clip from the same camera and settings next to it, then let a repair tool use that reference to rebuild the broken index.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera or the editing software try to fix the clip on the card itself. Repair attempts write into the file and can overwrite the very sample data that is still complete, which turns a recoverable recording into a short unusable fragment.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Recovery and repair are two different jobs. File Recovery Hero can read the card read-only and carry the container out to another drive, including as an unconfirmed export, but rebuilding a missing moov area is the task of a dedicated video repair tool working on that copy.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A rebuilt clip is good when the duration matches what was actually shot, the audio stays in step with the picture from start to finish, and scrubbing to the last minute still decodes. A file that opens but shows a few seconds is only a fragment.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can video recording card be recovered in this situation?+

Earlier takes being present is the useful signal here: the card was working and the camera was writing normally until the cut. The final recording is the only unresolved item, and it can be absent from the listing, present but unplayable, or both at once. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera or the editing software try to fix the clip on the card itself.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A rebuilt clip is good when the duration matches what was actually shot, the audio stays in step with the picture from start to finish, and scrubbing to the last minute still decodes.
