SD card shows no files: protect the card first

What should I do when my SD card shows no files?

Short answer

First check before scanning: confirm you are looking at the right volume and folder with hidden items shown, and do not run any repair. An empty view can come from lost exFAT directory entries or a damaged camera database while the media blocks remain readable. If the files are genuinely absent, run a read-only exFAT scan.

The situation

The card mounts, but Finder, Explorer, or the camera displays no recordings.

An empty card view is a statement about the directory, not about the media blocks. Until something writes to the card, the JPEG, RAW and video data most likely still occupies the same sectors it did during the shoot, waiting to be read out.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Three things produce this picture. The reader may have mounted a different volume than the one you shot on. The camera may have written its own database and lost track of the folder it filled. Or the exFAT directory entries for DCIM were released, which removes the names while the recordings themselves stay on the card.

An empty view can come from the wrong folder, lost exFAT directory entries, or a damaged card database even while media blocks remain readable.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Eject the card properly and put it aside. Do not return it to the camera, because powering up can rebuild the folder database.

  2. 2

Mount it read-only on a computer, switch hidden items on and note the volume name, capacity and whether used space is still reported.

  3. 3

Decline every repair offer, First Aid and CHKDSK included, and instead run a read-only exFAT scan of the physical card, not of a mounted folder.

  4. 4

Export the found recordings to an internal or external drive that is not the card, then sort them back into your shoot structure.

Avoid this now

Do not let the camera format the card, do not create a fresh DCIM folder by hand, and do not accept any offer to fix the file system. Each of those writes new directory data over the very area that still describes the missing recordings.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

This route assumes the card still enumerates with its correct capacity and reads without dropping out. File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 sources, so a card the operating system cannot address at all belongs in a flash laboratory rather than in a scan.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A usable result opens, not just appears in a list. Check that the file sizes match what a card of this capacity would hold, that photographs display to the last row of pixels and that clips play from the first frame to the final second without a freeze.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can SD card be recovered in this situation?+

An empty card view is a statement about the directory, not about the media blocks. Until something writes to the card, the JPEG, RAW and video data most likely still occupies the same sectors it did during the shoot, waiting to be read out. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the camera format the card, do not create a fresh DCIM folder by hand, and do not accept any offer to fix the file system.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A usable result opens, not just appears in a list.
