exFAT metadata analysis: measure recovery success

How do I judge the result of exFAT metadata analysis?

Short answer

Only by checking content against the metadata: an exFAT entry set records the original name and exact size, so a recovered file of that size that opens completely is a strong result. A matching name with wrong or zeroed content means its clusters were reused. Play long clips to the end before calling it success.

The situation

Candidate files exist, but their completeness and production value are still unknown.

The strength of this method is that it delivers a claim you can test. An entry set states a name and a byte count, so a recovered file either matches that count and opens cleanly, or it does not. Nothing here has to be guessed from appearance.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Metadata and payload age separately. The entry set can survive untouched while the clusters it points to have been handed to a new recording, which produces a file with the right name, the right size and wrong content. Fragmented long clips add a second trap, because only the first fragment is described.

File count, names and thumbnails measure something different from a full stream and format test. For exFAT metadata analysis, this matters because deleted entry sets can retain names, sizes and cluster positions

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Keep the card unchanged and export to a separate drive, so a second pass stays possible while you check the first.

  2. 2

Write down the name and exact size the analysis reports for each important file before opening any of them.

  3. 3

Compare each exported file with its recorded size, then open it and look at content rather than at the thumbnail alone.

  4. 4

Sort files into confirmed, wrong-content and incomplete, and run a signature scan for anything in the last two groups.

Avoid this now

Do not accept a restored filename as proof of a restored file, and do not delete the export folder once a few names look familiar. Names come from bookkeeping, content comes from clusters, and only opening the file shows whether the two still belong together.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Where an entry set is gone, names and dates are gone with it, and no analysis brings them back from the payload. File Recovery Hero exports unconfirmed results as .UNVERIFIED files and mends nothing, so a clip with foreign data inside stays unusable.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A confirmed file matches the recorded byte size exactly, opens at full resolution or plays to its stated duration, and shows the scene you expect from that filename and timestamp. A size mismatch of even a few kilobytes points to a reassembly that went wrong.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can exFAT memory card be recovered in this situation?+

The strength of this method is that it delivers a claim you can test. An entry set states a name and a byte count, so a recovered file either matches that count and opens cleanly, or it does not. Nothing here has to be guessed from appearance. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept a restored filename as proof of a restored file, and do not delete the export folder once a few names look familiar.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A confirmed file matches the recorded byte size exactly, opens at full resolution or plays to its stated duration, and shows the scene you expect from that filename and timestamp.
