Adobe Premiere Pro: only a proxy or preview remains

What can I do when only proxy media remains in Adobe Premiere Pro?

Short answer

Only as a fallback: a Premiere Pro proxy is a smaller, lower-quality transcode and cannot replace the camera original. Keep the proxy files, note the path of the original high-resolution media, then search the recording card and backup drives. If the originals were deleted, scan the card read-only before rebuilding anything from proxies.

The situation

Adobe Premiere Pro can play a smaller helper file, while the high-quality original is unavailable.

A proxy is a working copy at reduced resolution and bitrate, made so the timeline stays responsive. It carries the edit but not the image quality the delivery needs, so the situation is a missing master, not a broken project. The proxies themselves are worth keeping while the originals are hunted down.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Premiere Pro keeps proxies in their own folder next to the project or in the ingest destination, entirely separate from the camera originals on the card or the media drive. If someone freed space by deleting the high-resolution folder, or the originals stayed on a card that was reused, the project still plays because it has quietly switched to the proxy attachment.

Proxy and preview locations are separate from camera originals and contain less information. For Adobe Premiere Pro, this matters because Adobe Premiere Pro can keep references or helper media without containing a complete independent original

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Back up the proxy folder and the project file to a second drive, because the proxies currently hold the only playable version of the edit.

  2. 2

Read the original path from the clip properties with the proxy toggle switched off, and write down the filenames and the card or volume they came from.

  3. 3

Look for the full-resolution files on backup drives and on the camera card; if the card was not reused, copy them off before doing anything else.

  4. 4

If the originals were deleted, scan that source read-only, export the recovered clips to another drive and relink the timeline to them.

Avoid this now

Do not export a master from the proxy files as a substitute, and do not delete the proxies to force Premiere Pro to find the originals. The proxy resolution and bitrate cannot be restored, and deleting them leaves the edit with nothing to show.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

No tool turns a proxy back into camera quality, because the discarded detail was never stored. File Recovery Hero can only recover an original that still exists as data on an exFAT, NTFS or FAT32 source; a reused card has usually written over it.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

You have the real original when the clip plays with the proxy toggle off, the resolution and frame rate match the camera settings, and the file size is in the order of the card recording rather than the small proxy file.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Adobe Premiere Pro workflow be recovered in this situation?+

A proxy is a working copy at reduced resolution and bitrate, made so the timeline stays responsive. It carries the edit but not the image quality the delivery needs, so the situation is a missing master, not a broken project. The proxies themselves are worth keeping while the originals are hunted down. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not export a master from the proxy files as a substitute, and do not delete the proxies to force Premiere Pro to find the originals.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
