exFAT metadata analysis: use after formatting
How does exFAT metadata analysis help after a quick format?
Short answer
Often only partly: a quick format writes a new boot region, allocation bitmap and empty root directory, but old directory entry sets for subfolders in the data area can survive until overwritten. Where they do, names, sizes and cluster positions return with the files. Everything else needs a signature scan, so write nothing new first.
The situation
Old folders are gone while the newly formatted source appears ready to use.
A quick format on exFAT rewrites the boot region, the allocation bitmap and an empty root directory. What it does not do is walk through the data area and erase the directory entry sets that once described subfolders, so parts of the old bookkeeping can still be read there.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Camera cards help here by convention: recordings live in nested folders such as DCIM or M4ROOT, and the entry sets describing those folders sit in the data area rather than in the root. Where they survive, each set still carries the original name, the exact byte size and the first cluster, which is enough to reassemble an unfragmented file.
New file-system records and older payload blocks can coexist until later writes reuse them. For exFAT metadata analysis, this matters because deleted entry sets can retain names, sizes and cluster positions
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Stop using the formatted card at once, since new writes land first in the areas the fresh bitmap marks as free.
- 2
Note which folder names the camera normally creates, because those names help you recognise surviving entry sets in the results.
- 3
Run the metadata analysis read-only and let it finish the whole volume before exporting anything to a separate drive.
- 4
Export files with restored names first, then fall back to a signature scan for everything the entry sets no longer describe.
Do not reformat again in the hope of a cleaner state, and do not let the camera build a fresh folder structure on the card. Each new write can overwrite exactly the entry sets that still carry the old names and cluster positions, and they do not come back.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
Entry sets in the root directory are replaced by the format and cannot be read back, so files stored loose at the top level lose their names. File Recovery Hero reads such a card only while it stays stably readable, and it repairs no damaged file.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Surviving metadata shows itself clearly: filenames follow the camera pattern, sizes are exact rather than rounded, and the recovered file opens to precisely that size. When a name returns but the content is blank or belongs to another shot, the clusters behind it were already reused.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can exFAT memory card be recovered in this situation?+
A quick format on exFAT rewrites the boot region, the allocation bitmap and an empty root directory. What it does not do is walk through the data area and erase the directory entry sets that once described subfolders, so parts of the old bookkeeping can still be read there. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not reformat again in the hope of a cleaner state, and do not let the camera build a fresh folder structure on the card.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Surviving metadata shows itself clearly: filenames follow the camera pattern, sizes are exact rather than rounded, and the recovered file opens to precisely that size.
