Emergency · Final Cut Pro library and external media

Final Cut Pro cannot find original media

How can I locate missing media in Final Cut Pro?

Short answer

First check where the library expects the media: managed media lives inside the library bundle, while external media stays in its original folders, often on another drive. A moved library or unmounted drive is no proof of deletion. Reconnect drives and use File, Relink Files; scan the card or a drive image only if originals are gone.

The situation

Events and edits remain, but original or proxy media is missing.

Final Cut stores some media inside the library bundle and leaves other media where it was imported from, and the two behave very differently when something moves. Knowing which mode a clip uses decides whether this is a mounting question or a recovery one.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Managed media is copied into the library package at import, so it travels with the library. External media stays in its original folder, often on a card or a production drive, and the library only points at it. Moving the library, renaming the media drive or leaving it unmounted breaks those pointers without touching a frame.

Managed and external media use different storage locations, so a moved library is not proof of deletion.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Select the library in the sidebar and check the Library Properties for the storage locations set for media, cache and backups.

  2. 2

Mount every production drive under its original name, then quit and reopen Final Cut so it can re-examine the external paths.

  3. 3

Use File and Relink Files on the missing clips, choosing the folder that now holds the originals rather than a proxy folder.

  4. 4

If originals exist nowhere, scan the camera card or a disk image of it read-only and relink to the exported files.

Avoid this now

Do not open the library bundle in Finder to move files around by hand, and do not delete generated files while media is missing. Final Cut tracks its contents internally, and rearranging the package or switching to proxies can leave the library pointing at nothing at all.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A Final Cut library normally sits on an APFS or HFS+ volume, which File Recovery Hero does not read. It can scan the exFAT or FAT32 camera card the footage came from, or an uncompressed image of it, but not the library drive itself.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Switch the viewer to Optimized or Original media rather than Proxy and play the project through. Every clip should show its full resolution, the inspector should list the expected file path, and the browser should no longer mark any event item with a missing-media icon.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can Final Cut Pro library and external media be recovered in this situation?+

Final Cut stores some media inside the library bundle and leaves other media where it was imported from, and the two behave very differently when something moves. Knowing which mode a clip uses decides whether this is a mounting question or a recovery one. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not open the library bundle in Finder to move files around by hand, and do not delete generated files while media is missing.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Switch the viewer to Optimized or Original media rather than Proxy and play the project through.

Stop! Your files aregone.Back!

Scan for free first, then decide.
