Recover an Android microSD card outside the phone

How do I recover data from a damaged Android SD card?

Short answer

Only outside the phone: power it down, remove the microSD card and never accept the phone's format prompt. First confirm it was used as portable storage, because a card set up as internal, adoptable storage stays encrypted and cannot be read elsewhere. An ordinary exFAT or FAT32 card can be scanned read-only on a computer.

The situation

Media stored on a removable card is missing or the phone asks to format it.

The card has to leave the phone, and before any scan one thing has to be clear: was it used as portable storage or adopted as internal storage. Adopted cards are encrypted with a key that stays in the phone and cannot be read on a computer.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Android offers two roles for a microSD card. As portable storage it keeps an ordinary exFAT or FAT32 file system that any computer can read, holding DCIM, Movies and app folders. As adoptable storage it is formatted and encrypted for that one device. A format prompt usually means the file system looks damaged, not that the data is gone.

A removable card can be analyzed separately, unlike encrypted internal phone storage; adoptable storage may still be encrypted.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Decline the format prompt, switch the phone off completely and take the microSD card out of its tray.

  2. 2

Put it in a card reader on a computer and check whether the volume shows up as exFAT or FAT32 with a plausible capacity.

  3. 3

If it does, scan it read-only for the formats the phone writes, JPG, HEIC, MP4 and the audio format of your recorder app.

  4. 4

Export to the computer and only afterwards decide whether the card goes back into the phone or into the bin.

Avoid this now

Do not let the phone format the card, and do not install a recovery app onto the phone itself. A microSD card has no write-protect switch, so the only protection is keeping it out of the device, and app installs write straight into the storage you want to preserve.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Only removable cards in the portable role can be handled this way. Internal phone memory and adopted, encrypted cards stay closed to File Recovery Hero, which reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 on macOS and Windows and never decrypts a medium.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Open the exported photographs and videos on the computer at full size. HEIC files should decode rather than showing a placeholder, videos should run to the end, and the folder structure should look like what the phone used, with DCIM and app directories in familiar places.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can removable Android microSDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

The card has to leave the phone, and before any scan one thing has to be clear: was it used as portable storage or adopted as internal storage. Adopted cards are encrypted with a key that stays in the phone and cannot be read on a computer. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not let the phone format the card, and do not install a recovery app onto the phone itself.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Open the exported photographs and videos on the computer at full size.
