Emergency · recording card

Filenames remain but the media size is zero

What does it mean when camera files show zero bytes?

Short answer

It usually means the directory holds placeholders without a recorded data length, so those entries contain nothing to repair. The actual photo or video data may still sit elsewhere on the card. Stop using it, leave the empty entries alone and scan the card read-only for the formats your camera records.

The situation

Expected names appear in a folder, but each affected entry reports zero bytes.

A zero-byte entry is a name with no data length behind it. The directory records that a file was started, but no cluster chain was ever attached to it, so there is nothing inside that entry to open, convert or repair.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Cameras and recorders create the directory entry when a recording begins and fill in length and cluster references when it ends. A power loss, a full card or an abrupt card removal interrupts that, and the entry stays at zero. The image or audio data may nevertheless have been written to the card, simply without anything referring to it.

The directory update may have created placeholders without recording a usable data length.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the zero-byte entries where they are; deleting them frees nothing and removes the names that tell you what is missing.

  2. 2

Take the card out of the device and note which names show zero bytes and which neighbouring files have a normal size.

  3. 3

Compare the used capacity with the total size of the visible files: a large difference means unreferenced data is still on the card.

  4. 4

Scan the card read-only for the formats the device records, since that search reads the data directly rather than the empty entries.

Avoid this now

Do not try to repair the zero-byte files themselves and do not send them to a recovery service as if they contained the recording. They hold no payload at all, and a tool that rewrites them creates a plausible file with nothing in it.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

If the interrupted recording never reached the card, the scan finds nothing, and that is a complete answer rather than a failure. File Recovery Hero reads the card without changing it and exports only data that is actually present.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A genuine result is a file with a real byte size that opens on its own, not an entry that merely looks better in the listing. Photos must display at full resolution and recordings must play through; a duration close to what the device was recording confirms the match.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can recording card be recovered in this situation?+

A zero-byte entry is a name with no data length behind it. The directory records that a file was started, but no cluster chain was ever attached to it, so there is nothing inside that entry to open, convert or repair. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not try to repair the zero-byte files themselves and do not send them to a recovery service as if they contained the recording.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A genuine result is a file with a real byte size that opens on its own, not an entry that merely looks better in the listing.
