Emergency · camera SDXC card

DCIM folder empty: are the camera files still on the card?

Why is my DCIM folder empty?

Short answer

Usually because the entries inside the camera subfolder were deleted or damaged while the folder itself survived. The JPEG, RAW and video blocks can still sit elsewhere on the card. Do not create folders or let the camera rebuild anything; scan the exFAT card read-only for the formats your camera writes.

The situation

The volume mounts and DCIM exists, but its expected camera subfolder is empty.

DCIM surviving while its contents do not is normal after a deletion: the parent entry and the child entries are separate records. What matters now is that nothing recreates the missing subfolder, because the camera writes that structure into the same region.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Cameras store images in numbered subfolders such as 100CANON or 101MSDCF inside DCIM. A delete-all command, a card reset or damage to one directory cluster empties that subfolder while DCIM itself stays listed. The image and video blocks are untouched by this; only the records that name them and point at their start have gone.

The folder entry can survive after child entries are deleted or damaged, while JPEG, RAW, and video blocks remain elsewhere on the card.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Leave the folder tree exactly as it is: create no subfolder, copy nothing into DCIM and do not rename what is there.

  2. 2

Switch on hidden items and look once more, since some cameras mark the numbered subfolder or a MISC folder as hidden.

  3. 3

Scan the exFAT card read-only for the formats this body writes, JPG plus its RAW type and the video container if it was used.

  4. 4

Rebuild the numbered folder structure on your computer from the exported files, so the card itself never has to be written to.

Avoid this now

Do not put the card back in the body so it can create a new numbered folder, and do not copy a single test file into DCIM. Both write fresh directory entries straight into the area that still holds the old ones.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Only files whose data blocks are still intact can be exported, and that cannot be judged before the scan finishes. File Recovery Hero works on exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 cards; it does not repair a damaged individual photograph or rebuild a camera database.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Check the file numbering of the exported material against the last numbers you remember from the shoot, and look for gaps. Each photograph should open at full resolution and each clip should run to its end; a preview that renders while the full file fails is not a recovered original.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera SDXC card be recovered in this situation?+

DCIM surviving while its contents do not is normal after a deletion: the parent entry and the child entries are separate records. What matters now is that nothing recreates the missing subfolder, because the camera writes that structure into the same region. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not put the card back in the body so it can create a new numbered folder, and do not copy a single test file into DCIM.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Check the file numbering of the exported material against the last numbers you remember from the shoot, and look for gaps.
