How can files simply disappear from an SD card?
Short answer
Usually through one of five causes: unsafe removal, failing flash, directory corruption, counterfeit capacity or an interrupted write, each able to hide or replace exFAT records. Take the card out of use and first check whether it reads stably. Scan only a card that stays connected; an unstable one needs imaging or a laboratory.

Work out what actually disappeared
Five causes account for most of these cases. Pulling the card while a write was still queued, flash cells that no longer hold their charge, a corrupted exFAT directory, a counterfeit card that reports far more capacity than it has, and an interrupted write that left the allocation table half updated. Only the logical ones can be scanned.

Preserve the best recovery chance

Retire the card from production at once and put a different card in the camera, so nothing further is written to it.

Connect it twice and compare: same capacity, same volume name, same reaction time, no disconnects and no warnings in the system log.

If it behaves identically both times, scan it read-only; if it stutters or drops out, image it with a tool that logs unreadable areas.

Export everything you find to a drive with enough free space, then retire the card from the shoot rotation for good.
Do not run a repair or a full format to find out whether the card is still healthy. Each of those writes across the whole volume, and on a card that is already failing they can also push the flash past the point where it answers at all.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.
