Camera shows no pictures: do not take a test shot

Are my photos deleted when the camera shows no pictures?

Short answer

Not necessarily: camera playback relies on expected folders and database records, so an empty screen is no proof the image blocks are gone. Do not take a test shot. Remove the card, slide a full-size card's lock tab to locked, and inspect it read-only on a Mac or Windows computer without letting a camera build a new database.

The situation

Playback reports no images even though the card was used for a shoot.

Camera playback reads the folders and the database the body expects, and it shows nothing the moment either is out of step. That is a different question from whether the image blocks still sit on the card, and the answer to it is found on a computer.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A body only lists what fits its own naming scheme. A card formatted in another camera, a folder written by a computer, an aborted index rebuild or deleted entries all leave playback blank. Meanwhile the JPEG and RAW blocks remain where the shoot put them, which is why the card must leave the camera before anything else happens.

Camera playback depends on expected folders and database records; it is not proof that every image block is gone.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Switch the camera off and take the card out before doing anything else, so no test shot and no index rebuild can start.

  2. 2

On a full-size SD card slide the lock tab to the locked position; a microSD card has no such switch and needs a read-only workflow instead.

  3. 3

Attach it to a Mac or Windows computer, show hidden items and inspect DCIM and any manufacturer folder without changing them.

  4. 4

If the pictures are really absent, scan the card read-only for JPG and your camera's RAW format and export to the computer.

Avoid this now

Do not take a test shot to prove the camera still works, and do not accept the offer to format or rebuild the index. A single exposure is written into free space, and free space is precisely where the photographs you want are still lying.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A blank playback screen caused by a failing card is not a software case; if the card disconnects or reads inconsistently, a laboratory is the right address. File Recovery Hero reads stable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media and never writes to the source.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Judge the result on the computer, not on the camera screen. Every file should open at its full pixel dimensions in an image viewer, the file size should be typical for this body and format, and the shooting metadata should still name the lens and exposure.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera memory card be recovered in this situation?+

Camera playback reads the folders and the database the body expects, and it shows nothing the moment either is out of step. That is a different question from whether the image blocks still sit on the card, and the answer to it is found on a computer. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not take a test shot to prove the camera still works, and do not accept the offer to format or rebuild the index.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

Judge the result on the computer, not on the camera screen.
