Emergency · camera card with database warning

Camera asks to recover the image database

Should I let the camera recover its image database?

Short answer

Not if the recordings are irreplaceable: rebuilding the database writes changes to the card. The database is only an index, not the photos or clips themselves, so declining loses nothing. Image the card first; once the data is secured on another drive, the camera may rebuild its database without risk.

The situation

Playback is unavailable and the camera offers to rebuild or recover its media database.

The camera is offering to rebuild its own index, not the recordings. That index is a convenience file the camera uses for playback; the photos and clips sit next to it as ordinary files. Declining the offer costs playback, nothing more.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Consumer camcorders and cinema cameras keep a media database next to the recordings, in structures such as AVCHD or M4ROOT. When it disagrees with the folder contents, after a card swap, a power loss or deletion on a computer, the camera flags it and offers a rebuild. The rebuild writes to the card and can drop entries it cannot match.

The database is not the same as the recorded file payload, and rebuilding it writes changes to the source.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Decline the offer, switch the camera off and remove the card before the rebuild can start on its own.

  2. 2

Copy the complete folder tree to a computer through a reader, keeping the structure intact, and check which clips are actually missing.

  3. 3

If recordings are absent from the copy, image the card and scan that image read-only for the camera container format.

  4. 4

Once every take is secured on another drive and plays there, put the card back and let the camera rebuild its database.

Avoid this now

Do not accept the rebuild first and copy afterwards. The camera writes into the card while it repairs the index, and recordings whose entries it cannot reconcile may vanish from the listing entirely, which turns a playback problem into a recovery case.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A rebuilt database cannot bring back a recording that is no longer on the card, and File Recovery Hero recovers files rather than camera index structures. It reads exFAT and FAT cards and their images read-only, so the playback database has to be regenerated by the camera itself.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The card is safe to hand back once each clip has been played from the copy, not from the camera: right duration, sound present, no freeze in the middle. Compare the number of files and the total size of the copy against the card before the rebuild.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera card with database warning be recovered in this situation?+

The camera is offering to rebuild its own index, not the recordings. That index is a convenience file the camera uses for playback; the photos and clips sit next to it as ordinary files. Declining the offer costs playback, nothing more. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not accept the rebuild first and copy afterwards.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The card is safe to hand back once each clip has been played from the copy, not from the camera: right duration, sound present, no freeze in the middle.
