Emergency · Lightroom catalog and photo storage
Lightroom photos missing: path problem or deleted originals?
Why are my photos missing in Lightroom?
Short answer
Usually a broken path, not deleted photos: the catalog stores references and previews, so a moved folder or disconnected drive breaks the link while the originals survive. Reconnect the drive or right-click the folder and choose Find Missing Folder. Scan storage only if the actual JPEG or RAW file exists on no drive.
The situation
Thumbnails remain in Lightroom, but originals are reported missing.
A Lightroom catalog holds edits, previews and file paths, never the photographs themselves. When thumbnails remain but the originals are reported missing, the catalog is describing a link it can no longer follow, which is a very different problem from deleted image files.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
The link breaks for ordinary reasons. An external drive was not mounted before Lightroom opened, a folder was renamed or moved in Finder or Explorer, a network volume mounted under a new name, or the originals were deleted outside the catalog. Only the last of those calls for a storage scan.
A catalog stores references and previews; moving a folder or disconnecting a drive can break the path without deleting the source image.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Close Lightroom, mount every drive that ever held photographs, and reopen the catalog so it can find volumes that were simply absent.
- 2
Right-click the folder with the question mark in the Folders panel and choose Find Missing Folder, then point at its new location.
- 3
If that fails, search every drive for the original file names, such as IMG_ or DSC_ numbers, including the system trash.
- 4
Only when a file exists nowhere, scan the drive or card it lived on read-only and export the RAW or JPEG elsewhere.
Do not remove the missing photographs from the catalog to tidy the view, and do not let Lightroom write previews as replacements. Deleting the catalog entry throws away the recorded path and the edit history, which are often the only remaining clue to where the original was.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
A missing link is a catalog problem, so no recovery tool solves it; that part is done inside Lightroom. If the originals really were deleted, File Recovery Hero can scan exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32 storage, but not an APFS or HFS+ photo drive.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
A relink has worked when the question mark disappears and the photograph opens in the Develop module at full resolution with its edits attached. Compare the file size with the camera's usual output; a smart preview or a proxy renders happily and still is not the original file.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can Lightroom catalog and photo storage be recovered in this situation?+
A Lightroom catalog holds edits, previews and file paths, never the photographs themselves. When thumbnails remain but the originals are reported missing, the catalog is describing a link it can no longer follow, which is a very different problem from deleted image files. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not remove the missing photographs from the catalog to tidy the view, and do not let Lightroom write previews as replacements.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
A relink has worked when the question mark disappears and the photograph opens in the Develop module at full resolution with its edits attached.
