Damaged HEIC container: recovery before conversion

Can converting a damaged HEIC restore the photo?

Short answer

No. Converting a HEIC to JPEG needs a readable ISO-BMFF container and cannot recreate image items that are missing. If the file came from an exFAT card, recover the best original bytes from that card first, check that its boxes and image items are complete, and convert only a copy once the photo opens.

The situation

A HEIC file exists but Photos or another viewer cannot open it.

Converting cannot help here. A converter reads an ISO-BMFF container and writes a different format from it; that requires the image items to be present and coherent. If they are missing, the conversion fails or produces an empty result, so the recovery has to come first.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A HEIC holds its picture as one or more image items plus metadata boxes describing where each item lies and how it is coded. A broken-off copy, a card pulled during writing, or a recovery with a wrong end boundary leaves the header boxes readable while the item data is short. A viewer then reports a file it cannot open, which is a structural statement, not a compatibility one.

Conversion requires a readable ISO-BMFF image container and cannot recreate missing item data.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Set the damaged file aside as a copy and let no application rewrite, convert or re-import the original version.

  2. 2

If the file came from an exFAT card, stop using that card at once, because it may still hold better bytes.

  3. 3

Scan the card read-only for the HEIF family and compare each candidate's size with the damaged version you already have.

  4. 4

Export candidates to another drive, open them at full resolution, and convert a copy only if you still need JPEG.

Avoid this now

Do not run a conversion or a repair tool against the only copy, and never point either of them at the source card. A failed conversion can leave a shorter file behind, and a repair tool writing to the card destroys the better bytes you are looking for.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero recovers whole HEIC files from readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 media in a read-only pass; it repairs no damaged file and converts nothing. If the card holds no better version, only a specialised repair tool working on a copy remains.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The recovered version is the right one when its boxes parse cleanly, the image items are all present, and the photograph opens at the resolution the camera recorded. Compare it with the damaged file: a larger size and a clean structure show that the card really held more of the original.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can HEIC file and original exFAT card be recovered in this situation?+

Converting cannot help here. A converter reads an ISO-BMFF container and writes a different format from it; that requires the image items to be present and coherent. If they are missing, the conversion fails or produces an empty result, so the recovery has to come first. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not run a conversion or a repair tool against the only copy, and never point either of them at the source card.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

The recovered version is the right one when its boxes parse cleanly, the image items are all present, and the photograph opens at the resolution the camera recorded.
