What Is File Recovery?

What does file recovery mean, and when can it help?

Short answer

Retrieving lost or deleted files, usually from data still left on the drive: deletion often just marks the space as free until new writes reuse it. File recovery cannot bring back overwritten data. First check whether the file was moved or backed up, keep the device unchanged, and only then scan it read-only.

The situation

File recovery means retrieving lost files.

File recovery means retrieving lost or deleted files. Recovery software searches for surviving file-system records or recognizable file content and copies usable results to another drive. It can only examine data that still exists and remains readable. The term does not promise that every file will return, nor does it automatically refer to a particular product.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A missing photo in a catalog or clip in an editing project may only have an invalid saved path. Check known import folders and the original storage location first. An existing backup or cloud version offers a different recovery route from scanning the original device. Record which files are missing and what has changed since they disappeared.

Ordinary deletion often marks storage space as available for reuse. Recovery may remain possible while those areas still contain readable original data. A scanner can examine file-system traces or identify characteristic file structures. Without surviving directory information, original filenames and folders may be missing; fragmented files can also be incomplete even when a recognizable beginning is found.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Stop recording, downloading and installing on the device that held the missing originals.

  2. 2

Check the Recycle Bin, existing backups and version history; save useful copies away from the source.

  3. 3

Identify the file system and physical condition before selecting a suitable recovery method.

  4. 4

Save recovered candidates to a physically different drive and verify each important file in full.

Avoid this now

Do not confuse file recovery with repairing any damaged individual file. Never format the source or repair its file system to prepare a scan. Even a free scanner must not be installed on the affected drive. Repeated read errors, unusual noises or disconnections are reasons to stop and reassess, rather than try more software by default.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File recovery is a general term. Windows File Recovery is Microsoft's command-line program; File Recovery Hero is a separate application focused on photos, video and audio from supported exFAT sources and disk images. No program can read back original data that has actually been overwritten. SSD TRIM can also leave no readable original content to retrieve.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A result is useful only when the exported content is correct. Compare its size and expected content, open images fully and play videos with audio through to the end. A filename or thumbnail is not sufficient evidence. Retain the original source until you have verified the results and made an additional backup.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can missing files be recovered in this situation?+

File recovery means retrieving lost or deleted files. Recovery software searches for surviving file-system records or recognizable file content and copies usable results to another drive. It can only examine data that still exists and remains readable. The term does not promise that every file will return, nor does it automatically refer to a particular product. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not confuse file recovery with repairing any damaged individual file.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A result is useful only when the exported content is correct.

Preserve what remains.

Check the source first, then choose the appropriate next step.
