Recovery methods · recordings on exFAT cards
File Recovery App for Mac and Windows
How do you recover recordings with a desktop file recovery app?
Short answer
In three steps on macOS or Windows: choose a stable exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32 source or a disk image, run a read-only scan for the media formats you need, then export selected candidates to a different drive. File Recovery Hero is a desktop app, not a phone app; scanning is free, saving needs a license.
The situation
Choose the source. Scan. Save to another drive.
File Recovery Hero is a desktop app for macOS and Windows, not an Android or iPhone app. Choose a stable, readable exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32 source or a supported disk image, select the media formats you need and start a read-only scan. Then select suitable candidates and export them to another device. Finishing a scan does not by itself save recovered files.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
Before opening the app, identify the physical device that held the recordings. Connect a camera card through a suitable reader and check its displayed capacity so you do not select another drive by mistake. If you already have a supported raw image, select that as the source. An individual damaged MP4 file is not a disk image and cannot be used as the scan source here.
The workflow deliberately separates finding files from saving them. Discovered entries initially represent candidates and their assessment, not automatically complete recordings. Choosing media formats narrows the search; it does not change the card's file system. There is therefore no need to format the card beforehand or copy any files onto it to prepare the scan.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Open the appropriate desktop version on a healthy computer and follow its access and activation notices.
- 2
Select the correct exFAT card or a supported IMG, DD, RAW or BIN image, then choose the required media formats.
- 3
Start scanning and review the assessment of discovered files before selecting the candidates you want.
- 4
Choose a physically different destination drive, export the selection and inspect both the files and recovery report.
Do not install anything on the affected device. A second partition on the same device is not a separate recovery destination: it still shares the physical source. Stop if repeated read errors or disconnections occur. Do not return the card to recording duty as soon as scanning finishes while the exported files remain unchecked.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
The app processes media on your computer rather than uploading recordings to an online recovery service. It is not a mobile APK, browser scanner or hardware repair service. Direct scanning supports readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 sources and suitable uncompressed disk images, not APFS, HFS+ or ext4. The download is available before purchase; scanning and recovery require the license key.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
After export, compare the files actually saved with your selection. Inspect the whole image in photographs and check video duration, picture and sound through to the end. Read the report warnings and keep unconfirmed .UNVERIFIED files separate. Preserve the card or image until usable results have been checked and backed up separately.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can recordings on exFAT cards be recovered in this situation?+
File Recovery Hero is a desktop app for macOS and Windows, not an Android or iPhone app. Choose a stable, readable exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32 source or a supported disk image, select the media formats you need and start a read-only scan. Then select suitable candidates and export them to another device. Finishing a scan does not by itself save recovered files. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not install anything on the affected device.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
After export, compare the files actually saved with your selection.
