sports production: repair an incomplete ingest workflow

How do I investigate an incomplete ingest from the sports production?

Short answer

Not by re-ingesting blindly: compare each camera position's card with the destination and the match log, period by period. Action cams and high-frame-rate cameras produce many short or split clips, so filters and duplicate names easily drop some. If an import tool erased cards after ingest, scan those cards read-only before reuse.

The situation

The destination contains only part of the material from the sports production.

Gaps in an ingested sports shoot are almost always a copy problem rather than a recording problem. The cards still hold the frames the cameras wrote; the destination simply received fewer of them. Treat the destination as incomplete evidence and the cards as the reference until both totals agree.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Multi-camera sports days produce hundreds of short clips across fixed cameras, handhelds and action cams, and an ingest that ran while the next period was already being shot rarely survives unread errors. Duplicate clip names from identical camera models, a file-type filter set for one codec, or an import tool told to clear cards after copying each leave a different pattern of missing takes.

A copy interruption, filter, duplicate name or delete-after-import action can leave gaps. For sports production, this matters because the sports production combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Pull every card out of rotation, write-protect the full-size SD cards and store them in a labelled case, one label per camera position.

  2. 2

Build a list of expected clips from the match log and each camera's own counter, then compare it against the destination folder period by period.

  3. 3

Copy the missing clips again from the untouched cards with a read-only workflow, or scan a card that an import tool cleared before anything else writes to it.

  4. 4

Write every recovered or re-copied clip to a separate editing drive, then re-run the comparison so the destination and the card list finally match.

Avoid this now

Do not reformat or reuse a card for the next fixture while its material is unaccounted for, and do not let an ingest tool run its delete-after-copy step a second time. Reusing a card overwrites exactly the free blocks that still hold the missing plays.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 cards read-only; scanning is free and exporting needs a licence at 50 EUR once. It cannot rebuild a clip the camera never finished writing, and a card the reader no longer mounts belongs in a laboratory.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

The ingest counts as repaired when the clip count and byte total per camera position match the card, every recovered clip plays from first whistle to last without a freeze, and the timecode or creation time lines up with the period it belongs to.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can sports production cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+

Gaps in an ingested sports shoot are almost always a copy problem rather than a recording problem. The cards still hold the frames the cameras wrote; the destination simply received fewer of them. Treat the destination as incomplete evidence and the cards as the reference until both totals agree. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not reformat or reuse a card for the next fixture while its material is unaccounted for, and do not let an ingest tool run its delete-after-copy step a second time.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
