sports production: card appears empty after the shoot
What should I do when a card from the sports production appears empty?
Short answer
First stop every camera and pull the card, because sports crews reformat cards quickly between halves or heats. Label it with camera position and slot, then check whether it is simply a fresh card from the rotation. If recordings really were on it and it reads stably, scan it read-only before anyone formats it again.
The situation
At least one card from the sports production no longer shows the expected recordings.
Sports crews format cards between halves and heats to keep the turnaround short, so an empty card may simply be one that was already cleared for the next period. The other case is a directory damaged by a card pulled mid-write.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
A live sports workflow trades safety for speed: cards go straight from camera to the ingest laptop and back into the camera, often formatted in the body to save a step. An empty card is therefore either already offloaded, or it was formatted before the offload was verified, or it lost its directory when someone pulled it while the camera was still writing the final play.
Card rotation, accidental formatting, a damaged directory or the wrong physical card can produce the same symptom. For sports production, this matters because the sports production combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Take the card out of the rotation immediately and mark it with the camera position, slot and the period it covered.
- 2
Check the ingest laptop and the highlights folder for that period before assuming the material is gone from everywhere.
- 3
If no copy exists, put the card in a reader only and scan it read-only rather than letting the camera format it.
- 4
Export the recovered plays to the ingest drive and check them against the match clock and the shot log.
Do not send the card back to a camera for the second half, and do not let the body format it to keep the workflow moving. On a live schedule the pressure is to reuse cards fast, and that is exactly what makes the missing plays unrecoverable.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
The card must still read stably and be formatted exFAT, NTFS or FAT16/FAT32; File Recovery Hero works on macOS and Windows, not Linux, and not on encrypted or physically damaged media. Plays already recorded over during the next period cannot be brought back.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Check the recovered clips against the match clock: the period should be covered without gaps, each file should play to its end, and the camera audio should follow the action. Chapters from a long continuous recording must run on from each other without a missing passage.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can sports production cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+
Sports crews format cards between halves and heats to keep the turnaround short, so an empty card may simply be one that was already cleared for the next period. The other case is a directory damaged by a card pulled mid-write. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not send the card back to a camera for the second half, and do not let the body format it to keep the workflow moving.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Check the recovered clips against the match clock: the period should be covered without gaps, each file should play to its end, and the camera audio should follow the action.
