concert recording: find individual missing takes

How can I locate individual missing takes from the concert recording?

Short answer

Usually the setlist narrows it down fastest: note the song, its start time and which camera angle or multitrack channel is missing, then check only the card from that position. A slot change mid-show or a folder copied halfway explains many single gaps. Leave that card unused and scan it read-only for its recording format.

The situation

Most of the concert recording is present, but specific scenes, angles or tracks are missing.

One song or one angle is missing from an otherwise complete show. The setlist turns that into a precise question: which position, which time in the set, which card was in that camera then. That narrows the search to a single source.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

Gaps in a concert edit are almost always local. A card was changed between songs and the swap was not logged. A folder copy from one camera position stopped halfway. A channel from the desk recorder was never armed. Each of these affects one source and one stretch of the set, which is why the neighbouring angles are unaffected.

Partial deletion, a slot change or an incomplete folder copy can affect only one asset group. For concert recording, this matters because the concert recording combines several sources, takes and handoff steps that must be reconciled as a set

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Write down the song, its start time in the set and the camera position or channel that is missing from the edit.

  2. 2

Trace that time to a card using the change log, then take that card out of circulation and leave it unused.

  3. 3

Check every other copy first: the other angles, the desk recording, the proxy folder and any drive used at the venue.

  4. 4

Scan only that card read-only and export the recovered song to the edit drive before relinking it in the timeline.

Avoid this now

Do not shoot the next gig on the suspect card, and do not delete the partially copied folder so the transfer can start clean. Losing the partial copy also loses the file numbering that shows which songs of the set are actually absent.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

A scan can only return what the card still holds; a card used for the following shows is largely overwritten. Material that was never recorded, because a camera stopped or a channel stayed unarmed, cannot be produced by File Recovery Hero or by any other tool.

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

Place the recovered material on the timeline at the song's timecode and check it against the other angles: the music continues without a jump, the picture matches the same moment on stage, and the clip runs to its full length instead of stopping mid-song.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can concert recording cards and drives be recovered in this situation?+

One song or one angle is missing from an otherwise complete show. The setlist turns that into a precise question: which position, which time in the set, which card was in that camera then. That narrows the search to a single source. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not shoot the next gig on the suspect card, and do not delete the partially copied folder so the transfer can start clean.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
