Emergency · SDXC card
SD card suddenly empty although files were there
Why is my SD card suddenly empty?
Short answer
Often only the directory is lost: a broken exFAT directory chain hides files whose data is still intact. First confirm it is the same card, partition and capacity, and whether used space is still reported. Then stop writing to it and preserve that exFAT state with an image or a read-only scan.
The situation
The card showed files earlier but now reports an empty volume.
Used space is the useful clue here. If the card still reports gigabytes in use while showing nothing, the files exist and only the path to them is broken. If it reports a completely free volume, the question shifts to what wrote that state.
01 / Diagnose
Work out what actually disappeared
An SDXC card ships formatted as exFAT, and exFAT keeps the file names in a directory chain separate from the data itself. When a link in that chain is damaged, whole folders drop out of view at once. The same symptom appears if a different card, partition or mount point is being looked at.
A lost directory chain can hide intact data; a different card, partition, or mount point can create the same symptom.
Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.
02 / Protect the source
Preserve the best recovery chance
- 1
Compare the reported capacity with the number printed on the card, and check in the disk tool whether used space is still shown.
- 2
Unmount the card and stop every background process that indexes removable media, so nothing writes thumbnails or search data to it.
- 3
Preserve the current exFAT state, either by making an uncompressed sector image of the card or by scanning the physical device read-only.
- 4
Export what the scan finds to another drive and rebuild the folder layout there, leaving the card untouched until everything checks out.
Do not reformat the card because it looks empty anyway, and do not let a repair tool rebuild the directory. A quick format lays down fresh administrative structures over the exact records that still describe where each file begins and ends.
03 / Choose the method
Match the tool to the source
For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.
Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.
This works while the card reads stably. A card that reports the wrong capacity, disconnects mid-scan or grows hot is a hardware case for a laboratory, and File Recovery Hero cannot read a medium that is encrypted or that the system never addresses.
04 / Verify
Check the recovered content, not just its name
Add up the sizes of the recovered files and compare the total with the used space the card reported. If the numbers are in the same range and the files open cleanly, the directory really was the only casualty; a large gap means part of the volume is still unaccounted for.
Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ
Questions about this recovery case
Can SDXC card be recovered in this situation?+
Used space is the useful clue here. If the card still reports gigabytes in use while showing nothing, the files exist and only the path to them is broken. If it reports a completely free volume, the question shifts to what wrote that state. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.
What should I avoid before scanning?+
Do not reformat the card because it looks empty anyway, and do not let a repair tool rebuild the directory.
Does scanning write to my memory card?+
Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.
How do I know whether the result is complete?+
Add up the sizes of the recovered files and compare the total with the used space the card reported.
