File Recovery Hero/Guides/Emergency

Emergency · camera recording card

Files missing after the camera battery died

Can recordings survive when the camera loses power?

Short answer

Usually yes for earlier files, which were already written; only the image or clip being saved at that moment is at risk. Remove the card and do not let the camera run any repair. Then tell a missing directory entry apart from an unfinalized last file, and repair only a recovered copy of that file.

The situation

The battery failed while the camera was saving an image burst or video clip.

Power vanished mid-write, so the card holds two different kinds of loss. Everything the camera finished before the cut is normally still there in full. Only the asset that was being saved, and the directory update belonging to it, may have stopped halfway.

01 / Diagnose

Work out what actually disappeared

A camera writes the file payload first and updates the directory afterwards, so a power cut can leave either half unfinished. If the entry never landed, the photo or clip exists on the card without a name. If the payload stopped, the file is listed but truncated, and a video may lack the moov area it needs to play.

The active asset or directory update may be incomplete, while earlier committed files can remain intact.

Check the last known path, trash and backups without writing to the original device.

02 / Protect the source

Preserve the best recovery chance

  1. 1

Switch the camera off and take the card out before charging a battery or turning the body back on.

  2. 2

Note the last file number the camera showed and compare it with the DCIM folder on a computer, without deleting anything.

  3. 3

Attach the card through a card reader, keep every access read-only, and scan for the photo and video formats this camera records.

  4. 4

Export the recovered files to another drive, then open the last one; send only that copy to a repair tool if it stays unplayable.

Avoid this now

Do not put the card back into the camera with a fresh battery to see whether the files return. The camera may rebuild its index, write a new folder or finalize the broken file in place, and any of that can cover the unnamed data still sitting on the card.

03 / Choose the method

Match the tool to the source

For stable, readable exFAT, NTFS and FAT16/FAT32 or uncompressed IMG, DD, RAW and BIN images.

Unconfirmed exports are marked .UNVERIFIED.

Data that never reached the card cannot be recovered, and a truncated clip stays truncated: File Recovery Hero reads exFAT, NTFS and FAT card structures read-only and rebuilds files, but it does not repair a damaged container. That last step needs a separate video repair tool on a copy.

Raw volumes, MBR/GPT and full product limits

04 / Verify

Check the recovered content, not just its name

A recovered burst counts as intact when every frame opens at full resolution with the capture time the camera recorded, not just as an embedded preview. For the interrupted clip, check that it plays to its stated end without the picture freezing while the timeline keeps running.

Keep the source until two verified copies exist. One working preview is not enough.

FAQ

Questions about this recovery case

Can camera recording card be recovered in this situation?+

Power vanished mid-write, so the card holds two different kinds of loss. Everything the camera finished before the cut is normally still there in full. Only the asset that was being saved, and the directory update belonging to it, may have stopped halfway. The result still depends on what remains readable on the source.

What should I avoid before scanning?+

Do not put the card back into the camera with a fresh battery to see whether the files return.

Does scanning write to my memory card?+

Your memory card is only read. Nothing is saved to it.

How do I know whether the result is complete?+

A recovered burst counts as intact when every frame opens at full resolution with the capture time the camera recorded, not just as an embedded preview.
